DIY Ural Camper

Post by rebelrider » Tue Jan 31, 2017 8:42 pm

I'm gonna build a little camper to tow behind the Ural. So far, its in the day-dream phase, but I have a few specific ideas in mind as to what I want.

I'm hoping you all can help me though. I'd like to build this thing on a flat utility trailer, ideally 4' wide by 6' long. I've not been able to find such a trailer yet. They all seem to be 4x8 or larger, or 3x4 or smaller. Once I find the trailer I'll be using, I can begin an actual design. Any suggestions?

Here's one, but you might have to put it on a diet:

If you haven't seen this yet, http://www.tnttt.com (teardrops 'n tiny travel trailers forum) is a great resource if you're looking to build your own camper trailer. I spent a lot of time researching on there when I was looking at building one for myself. I'm still considering it, and as I have access to a welder and have built and re-engineered several inexpensive harbor freight trailers, I think at this point I'd probably lean toward designing and building my own trailer frame. I haven't been particularly happy with the leaf spring/straight axle configuration typically offered and would want to go with a torsion spring setup to get a lower profile on anything I build in the future, if only to lower center of gravity and profile of the trailer.

Contact Wildhorse Cafe. He has a small trailer and some pretty neat ways to make it comfy for himself & wife. They were camping in the west, and in Yellowstone NP. They lost a discussion of right-of-way with a buffalo.

I don't know what it is/was, but it will fit inside of a 4Runner.

YMMV

One last thing, since your ideal was 4' X 6' I looked at Northern Tool's 4' X 8'. Since it is bolt together, you should only have to cut the outer rails and re-drill a few bolt holes to shorten it. You can get it in steel or aluminum.

I think I've settled on this one:

The width is right, but its a little short. I think I can add a couple feet without too much difficulty though.

If you are planning to add that length to the rear of the trailer, I would be definitely be careful and try to plan out your weight distribution. As it looks, if you go further back it may end up with too much weight over the tires, or worse behind them. Here is an example of what happens https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jk9H5AB4lM which will definitely not be good on a three wheel ural.

Two comments. There is a formula for calculating the distance trailer wheels should be fron the hitch. Weight distribution also very important. I had a trailer full of siding behind a full size pick up. At about 50 mph trailer started swaying side to side. Kept oscillating in wider and wider deviations from center. Tried slowing down and it got worse. Finally sped up about 10 mph and it tracked true. Had a very scary time trying to gingerly slow back down to about 45 where it stopped swaying

I might suggest a 4 x 8 trailer cut down to 6 feet if that's length u want. Trailer u pic is very narrow. A 4 foot tall trailer will be perilous in side winds on narrow width. I have a SUZUKI samurai tin top. Side wind pushes me all over the place. Just my thoughts

Here's a sketch of what I have in mind. I got the wheel size wrong in the drawing, but otherwise its pretty close to scale. 1 square = 2"
I put the camper on a separate paper so I can experiment with how much the overhang in back will be. Pretty sure the tongue is going to have to be lengthened though.

The only DIY I needed to do was attach the trailer hitch and wire it up.
