Maasdam - Mods

Post by GHGoodwin » Fri May 29, 2015 4:11 pm

Stuck off the road for a day or two due to minor work on knee and associated meds. I finally got around to working on a couple of rope puller mods I wanted.

First - I modded (trimmed up) a 1/2in chain clamp link for the front of the puller. I haven't welded it on yet in the photos.

Second - I made a snatch block out of the pulley. Replaced the bolt with an 8mm clevis pin. The hook axle is three pieces; two nylon bushings on a steel center tube. I green locktited them together so they stay in one piece and the hook still floats. I also had to remove the two rope keeps on the inside of the side panels. They were useless anyway.

Good job.
I can't imagine why this isn't done at the factory.
I added a hook to mine at the front--good for skidding logs.
[No, I don't have pix. Hint: my snatch block is 6" dia.]
These tools are amazing--so much pull & so little battery trouble.

I've done only one thing to my puller......bought a 150 foot coil of rope.....yup, I can reach just about anything now. I might have to give your mods a look. :foilhead:

Conversion to snatch block just makes working with the pulley easier. You don't have to thread the line through from the end.

The chain link on the fronts only an easier way hook up the system for loading the bike on my trailer. The puller will get the bike on in a straight line 1:1 pull ratio but what I show is an easy to set up 2:1 because you don't need a separate anchoring point for the hook.

I'm also looking around for another hook/pulley to use as a deadeye so I can increase the mechanical advantage a bit more.

Thanks! This thread has turned me on the Maasdam. I like the prices considering the alternatives.

Have a good one.

What do you use as an anchor after getting hooked to the bike, assuming there are no trees or GoldWings within reach? On one of the TopGear shows the Orangutan was off-roading in a scottish bog. After sticking the LandRover, his recovery team looked like they were using small plow anchors (as in boat) to anchor their winch. One more thing to add to the sidecar :?:

It's called a ground anchor. But, some folks do just carry a boat anchor. They are rather inexpensive.

Still not sure I understand why this is better other than using more rope? :?

Yeah, cheap. I saw one yesterday at 2nd-hand thrift store. It was about 18"-20" across and long double pointy things. It is a pretty heavy thing and comes with about 8' of heavy rope with a metal eye thing braided in it - only $10 for the whole thing. I didn't buy it, maybe some other day...

YMMV

That's a great deal.

There are a lot of trees around here, so just the puller should work for me.

The idea is to make the puller smaller without using tools. Hal's idea done.

Replace the center bolt with a (self-made) pin and spring pin. Removing the handle from the "body" of the puller makes the package shorter and easier to put somewhere.

Example:
