Gel Pad (moved)

I can't find any posts on the subject. I want to try a Gell pad and see if it works. I might have the seat modified if it does.

I have the 2/3 Bench seat (or whatever they call it)

Anyone guy a generic pad or a cut down one that works for that application?

My experiences with gel pads are mixed.
I find they add comfort when built into the seat for short and medium distances but tend to diminish some at higher miles. Seat covers with gel pads don't seem to work as well, I find they tend to conform too closely causing that swampy feeling down there which leads to chafing.

Comfort is always subjective, but it seems gel padding is more beneficial to skinnier folks with bony bottoms than to those of us with natural padding.

I am one of those people that puts weight on up front and have a skinny butt. No idea how or why it works that way.

My wifes cousin ran a Goldwing and he liked the gell pad but Gold Wings are more numerous and easier to get a fit for one. I really don't want to have to buy a whole seat.

I had limited success with gel pads as well, though I did use one on a ZX1000R back when they first started marketing them for motorcycles. A vendor game me one to try when I was working at a dealership. It was decent. I cut out foam and addd it to the seat. It did get hot in the sun though.

I recently tried a pad in my Concours seat and took it out after one ride. I still haven't got that seat right, but it is a badly designed Corbin, so the base leaves a lot to be desired.

I have replaced the foam in it, though I have gone through different foam, cut different ways to fit, so now what is in it is a patchwork. What I have in it now is comfortable, but I really need to buy new full pieces to get rid of the patchwork pieces I have in it now.

Been using a Airhawk for a few years.

I inherited an Air Hawk. I would have never bought one myself, thinking that they were just another snakeoil farkle that people buy at big meets. But, I've used mine on my 305 Honda Scrambler for 2 and 1 day giro type events. Needless to say, the vinyl covered concrete seat on that Honda leaves a little to be desired. The Air Hawk does a great job of increasing comfort. The secret is to not over-inflate them. Really just a breath of air is all it needs so that it will form your your hiney and still provide support/cusioning.

I'm also a decades-long AirHawk user. The company also makes cushions for wheelchair users, so they know a thing or two about day-long comfort. In addition, they're located in Belleville, Illinois, close to my childhood home.

One of my trips NY to Daytona (and back of course), bike of choice was BMW r1100RT, the top-of-the-line road bike from them at the time, But after 5-6 hours of riding the stock seat sucked to the point of pain. Last day in Daytona I bought an Air Hawk. At first I put too much air in it and uncomfortable. The tiniest amount of air is needed and folks that don't like after buying sometimes make the mistake of putting in too much, don't use it the proper way.
Literally saved my butt, 18 hours riding straight-thru. I sold mine here on SS when I stopped doing ridiculous over the road riding. Great product.
Pretty ugly but not as ugly as a Russell Daylong which is what I eventually did with the r1100rt.

I see you list a bunch of bikes you had or have. But what seat do you have on you current 2019 Ural that makes it so uncomfortable? You've got those super fancy shocks (remember I bought your OEM Sachs a couple years ago). How much riding do you before it becomes uncomfortable?
I have tractor seats on my Patrol and find them more comfortable than the stock bench seat that came on the bike.
Of course I wouldn't be riding/piloting the Ural for any length of time anyway. Not built for it.

I will also highly recommend the AirHawk. I have one and use it on my Concours. It works very well. As Stagewex said, less air is better. You need just enough that it supports you, but not so much that you feel like you are riding a balloon. It really takes very little air to be comfortable.

Well, there is a Corvette coupe with the tops off, sitting in the sun with black leather seats and you are wearing shorts that are in style at the time which is the mid-80's meaning Richard Simmons short. Can you spell S-I-Z-Z-L-E ???

And you can't jump off it like you can a bike. You have to somehow climb out leaving a portion of your thighs stuck to the seat. You only make that mistake ONCE.

Regarding the gel pad in the sun, where he lives, he will also have to contend with a gel pad in the cold. They do get cold, and they take a very long time to warm up.

A gel pad can work for some people. I would put some foam over them though to help insulate you from the gel pad itself.

I have a bunch of back/neck/hip issues and have tried the Ural Enduro seat, a Ural 2/3 seat with a gel pad & Alaska Leather Sheep-skin, but only seat set-up that truly works for me is a Russel Day Long.

I had the D/L built on a Ural 2/3 seat pan and had it made with the Sunbrella fabric in the seating surface to help keep the air flowing and avoid swamp-arse. I can easily ride 8-10 hours with little or no discomfort and still walk at the end of the day.

I have a Russell Day Long on mine as well. I have done 500 mile days on it. Great seat.
