BMW conversion to Ural/Dnepr

Post by gobium » Sun Feb 25, 2018 10:01 am

Ok your are thinking of doing the conversion . :?:
You are not happy with ural motor, not dependable enough? Not POWER enough?
So let's marry BMW motor to Ural or Dnerp gearboxes.

Lot of folks done this successful

But the last few years, folks had contacted me for gear box input shafts.
Why? Imho, bmw motor is not play well with Ural or Dnerp GBs,
even on my BMW/Dnepr rig.

I had a local ural owner wanted to do conversion on his 2011 Gear
Up. The ural runs PERFECTLY but not power enough on freeway
or off roading. I didn't try to talk him out of conversion because
I wanted his Ural engine.

Well guess what? He spent lot of money on his Ural/BMW and after 3 input gb shafts! He gave up. BTW the conversion was built
by a well-known builder, NOT ME.

Some of folks here will say the conversion was not done right!
Not true, there are only few folks that do these conversions,
some conversions was done by the best builder some are done by home shop .

There is no free modification, something got to give.

Your rig your money , just my opion
BMW conversion WILL last a long time but got to ride like Ural, kinda defeating the point of conversion!

For a second there Van I thought you were talking about putting a Ural motor in a BMW. Silly me, why would anyone ever do that?

Has anyone ever been able to mate not just a BMW engine but the drive-train as well to a Ural? Got be a lot of chopping and welding I'd think but anything is possible.

It would have to be the complete drivetrain......engine, gearbox, and final drive......

By that time, might just better buy a BMW.

The /5 frame (and later /6,7) being two-piece simply isn't up to the trashing. Needs one-piece /2 frame with /5 (or later) engine and Earles fork. Still no reverse. Twenty years ago I would have tackled building a custom heavy frame for BMW gear (no energy for that nonsense anymore).

My Dnurl is happy at 60 mph. Wish it would climb hills with a little more authority, but.. .. it's teaching me "patience".

I bought a 1969 R60/2 in pieces from this guy many years ago when he lived in Alberta . He was putting /5 and /6 drive trains in /2 frames among other things. I guess anything is possible if you throw enough time, energy and money at it.

As the owner of a "OEM Ural engine in GU" and a "Pro-Stock Woodsplitter" (http://www.sovietsteeds.com/forums/view ... ck#p642072),

I can tell you:

BIGGER IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER.

Learn to live with what you have. Slow down, smell the roses, be at peace with around you. Yeah, my Victory can eat up miles like corn-flakes, but the Ural GU has it's own charms.

YMMV

I converted a 1998 ural rig for a customer some years ago ( BMW R75/7 engine, Dnepr gearbox, M63 drive shaft). Two years later he brought the rig to my shop and wanted car wheels all around and disc brakes. So I built in Smart car wheels with 135/70-15 tyres and Smart car disc brake rotors with small Grimeca calipers. He rode the rig some 65 k km and after being at bad health and the bike was worn out totally and rusting terribly he asked me if I would like to have it for free. I took it and disassembled it vompletely to see what's left. We have very strict registration law in Germany and it's all legal with this rig. So I plan to build it up again and change the Dnepr tranny and final drive for BMW parts I have lying around in the shop. There is a shop in Germany that adds a reverse gear to 5 gear BMW gearboxes. So I won't miss the reverse and will have a Ural with car tyres, disc brake and a complete 50 hp BMW drivetrain. I have a bent R 50/2 frame I could cut for extracting the swing arm connection. This will take app. 18 month lack of time and will be my winter rig, with enough space for snow chains between the swing arms. I'm looking foreward to this project and I will open a new thread with pictures once I started it.

What happens to the input shaft, Van. Do they snap or does the clutch spline simply saw thru them?

Ural 650 engine in a BMW /2 for classic racing. There was one such outfit in Australia many years ago. /2 engine parts were outrageously expensive and Ural 650s were cheap. Not a race winner but reasonably competitive. The organising club was happy to have something different in the field. Triumphs and BSAs were the regular race winners.

The optional installation of a short 1st gear is possible, make sense especially for sidecar bikes.
Hmmm.... "short" = lower ratio??

Yes. minus 5 % for the lower ratio 1st gear and plus 6% for the higher ratio 5th gear

That´s my source: http://www.r-o-t-h.com/Getriebe_09.htm For € 2.100,-- ($ 2.570) . Rebuilt and built in reverse gear, price for a delivered used gearbox.
€ 2500 for a replacement gearbox, € 2.800 for a gearbox without exchange
