Half drunk & wandering

Post by Robert Whitten » Wed Dec 16, 2020 6:03 pm

Was wandering how many old home mechanics have made gaskets from cerial boxes. On the farm my dad was not mechanical minded. I done all repairs to equipment & tractors from 9-10 year old (67 now) We never bought gaskets for most stuff aside head gaskets & pan gaskets. Made most from them old cervical boxes. Was wandering who else been through that experience.

My missus has one of those, but I haven't made anything noteworthy with it.

Seriously, I've often wondered about wandering.

I never had to resort to cardboard. Made a lot of gaskets by hand out of bulk basket material.

I hate that auto correct. Cerial boxes. Made many from the gasket material after I worked public. Thought those gasket makers for pipe flanges was wonderful. Wished I had one now.

I admit to making many gaskets out of cereal boxes, my Dad only spent money after all other options were tried. I have amazed myself with how long some of those quick-fixes have lasted.

I’ve been lucky always to have access to gasket material when making my own gaskets. But my first job out of college in the 90’s was in gasket engineering, and my boss was Romanian: He said if you ever take a long trip in an older car, pack a manila folder and that way you’ll be able to make a gasket on the side of the road.

Or a pizza box if you need a thicker gasket! I think my old Dnepr came with that material in common use.

I've used cardboard to make a gasket a time or 2 but nothing critical, like an airfilter to carb manifold on a B&S engine.
