In Los Angeles north County around Pasadena/San Gabriel the local heads from the late 70s will throw names out and say
" Yeah. Van Halen played my High School Dance, Garage Party, Sisters B-Day, ﹰEvery ﹰFriday and Saturday. I knew Eddie and Alex and David Lee Roth and this and that ...very well"
I've probably heard that story a 100 times. My neighbor, and riding partner, put his money where his mouth is....The Poster attached. It's legit.
I gotta say Van Halens' 1978 debut album, I loved Eddie but thought DLR a fig. In 1980 driving by Oakland Stadium " Van Halen Tonight ".
Screech !!! Hit the brakes. BEST $10 bucks ever spent. DLR sold me and opened my eyes to showmanship. DLR, can't say stole the show but made it astonishingly memorable. Women and Children First Tour.
Lastly, in my pottery grouping it's majority women older than I. I'm 61. A few years back when DLR re-united for a few shows a group of these women had tickets. None, not one had ever heard of Van Halen. I begged to go but the clan was tight. Afterwards I asked about the show and they all said loud and annoying. Eddie, as usual, was ripping it.
Rest in Paradise Eddie. You lived it and gave us a wickedly good time.
