This trailer will require miniature hay bales. I fully expect hay rides at future rallies when this is completed...
It's funny you mention that, because it was part of my "sales pitch" to the missus for purchase authorization. She was more concerned about a 14-hour, tri-state journey during coronavirus season than adding more decrepit Slavic hardware to the property. :D

SPEAKING of the trailer, you reminded me that I wanted to investigate the most effective tool in my arsenal for paint and rust removal.

I tried a belt sander, but kept tearing belts.

I tried a Dremel Multi-Max oscillating sander, but it was too slow-going.

The "beast mode" tool ended up being an angle grinder with a 40-grit flap wheel.

The concave curvature of the fender innards makes the angle grinder awkward. I have a little handheld sandblaster that I have not yet tried out, so maybe that's a solution, at least for the nooks and crannies.

A little progress, but there's a lot left to do.

Nice, but you sold me a perfectly good trailer a few years ago! I would have sold it back! ;-) Nice one!

I sold you a trailer? I think you have me mixed up with some other Fixer of Tomcats. 🤔

I did sell that trailer to BigJames, It's a nice custom build.
I'm pretty sure I traded 2 Ural Bottle cap wheels to Steve for the original Dnepr ones from Chads trailer.

We're gonna arbitrarily call it a 1988, then. 😉

Erring on the side of caution for a load-bearing clamp...

2020-05-19 13.51.34.jpg

... I bribed one of the skilled welders at work with beer to repair the broken clamp, instead of attempting to repair it myself at my current skill level of 'zero'.

I'm eager to get the hitch cleaned up and painted, so I can mount it on a bike to gauge it's positioning.

I got the wheels back from the sandblasting service. They couldn't completely remove the amazingly resilient chrome, but their efforts did reveal exactly how corroded the wheels had become.

I suppose I'll need to use a chemical rust remover, such as Evapo-rust, to clean out the pits and find a primer that will successfully adhere to the remaining chrome.

Fun project.

Try Ospho on the wheels. Etches and converts the rust pits to grey metal and provides a great bonding surface for primer. It's my go-to bare metal treatment. Let it sit on the metal for 24 hours for best results.

Thanks for the tip. I tried Evapo-rust and found it to be most effective. Now it's time to evaluate another product.

I wonder if I'll need to fill those pits with Bondo before priming? They're kinda deep. 🤔

Chad. I can give you a deal on my blast cabinet if you like. Perfectly functional and big enough for a fender or wheel. Let me know.

If you could PM, e-mail, or text me some images and any relevant details, I'll see if it'll fit my needs.
