KMZ Dnepr600 Trailer Acquisition

Post by Tomcatfixer » Sat May 09, 2020 4:07 pm

In keeping with my history of making really long day trips to purchase trailers (Illinois, Ohio, and Pennsylvania for three different trailers), I departed Gordonsville at 3:30 in the a.m. and made a seven-hour trek to Clemson, South Carolina, where I purchased the subject trailer from a Ural community fixture - Ural land speed record breaking team member, Steve Jackson.

I had been interested in both adding a trailer hitch to one of my Urals and acquiring a factory built trailer for some time now. Unfortunately, those trailers don't pop up for sale terribly often. When I saw Steve advertise his on Facebook, I jumped on the opportunity.

It's in decent shape, for living outdoors. It has some surface rust, the shocks need to be serviced, probably needs wheel bearing work, and the tires are flat. Regardless, I'll give it the standard, overly-thorough Tomcatfixer Overhaul and get it back to top shape. I haven't decided if I will keep it black or if I will paint it satin nutmeg. :P
Since it has the tie-down loops, like the old Ural tubs do, welded around the perimeter, I think I will have a tarp/cover made for it. I also think applying a bed liner to the interior would be wise.

Since I'm still currently on the 7 hour homeward leg of my journey, I just snapped a few quick pics to share.

I found this webpage that mentions the trailer...

...and I plan to do a little more research, when I get home, but if any of you have information to share about these things, I would be more than happy to read it.

Chad,

Nice find. Hope you have as much fun with it as you do with the rest of your stable.

I like small trailers as they keep you from taking too much stuff. Yours kind of reminds me of the trailer used by the military in the 60s -80s and pulled behind a M151 Jeep. I kind of recall they were M416 but my memory is hazzy on that.

Best,

Will the motorcycle side of the hitch work on a Ural, or is it Dnepr specific?
If Dnepr specific, how much modification will it need to fit your Ural?

Good question(s). I guess I'll have to take a look at that tomorrow.

Also, if any of the Readers of Cyrillic out there are willing to translate this for me, I'd appreciate it.

I imagine it's something like Model 600, then something about load capacity in kilograms, but I'd like to know for certain.

Chad,

It is in Ukrainian.

Model Dnipro (Dnepr) 600
Маса вантажи- weight of load 100kg.
Повна маса - full weight 205kg.

The link you provided says load capacity no more than 85kg!

Not that anything wrong with Dnepr wheels, it's just Ural wheels are much needed. But any wheel can be used, since there is no brake. I guess bad, ground splines are also ok on a retailer.

No modifications needed so far, i sold a handfull of them in the late 90ies and early 2000 where I hat to bring the hitch to Geman roadworthy standard. No more work needed. I had customers with both Dnepr and Ural rigs that both fit to the trailer.
What I did was to modify the hitch to bring the trailer into the middle of the rig accurately, but that was only about one inch off and because I had to weld on the hitch anyway to take the German parts, it was not additional effort.
owned bikes: 93 Ural rig domestic model, 95 Suzuki DR 650 RSE, BMW R100GS, Suzuki GSX1100G rig, BMW R100R rig with Ural sidecar, Ural rig with BMW drivetrain under construction,

Good information, Claus. Observing the hitch, it seems that the two clamps are very close together at the end of the tube, with no other reinforcements. I imagine that this would give the trailer much leverage and apply considerable stress to the attachment points. Would it not be advisable to somehow reinforce the hitch tube with a brace?

Great fined. Now you can bring all the camping gear, beer, cider etc. to the next rally.

As for color, I’d say a base color until you know what Color your new Ural will be. ;)
