Need advice on packing two small dogs....

Post by WiskeyJaR » Thu May 07, 2020 10:55 pm

Plan on doing a lot of remote camping this summer and am seeking advice on packing two small dogs, 35/40 lbs each. The Missus is top monkey in the hack, no room left for dogs. Anyone got any suggestions, other then a trailer? Bike is still under warranty.

You will be severely handicapped for space if you plan on hauling wife and two dogs of the size you mention in the hack. Safety also becomes and issue when done like that, especially with long distance travel. You may consider removal of the trunk lid and then tethering the dogs into the trunk as a possible option. Not ideal though, but space is already limited in the hack on a routine basis to begin with. Another option may be to take just one dog and adjust to that if it will work for you. Board the other then.

I rode with my three dogs for years in my Ural. No issues then except whenever I tried to add an adult or even a good-sized child. Dogs simply do not like to sit still for hours on end of travel in my own experience. Larger dogs just end up compromising a lot of comfort, I suspect. Good luck in what finally works for you though. Maybe someone else can come up with some better thoughts on it for you.

Get the wife her own bike and you each take a dog? Joking, but as a motorcyclist only 1/2 cause who doesn't need an excuse for a 2nd bike...

I've seen "duffel bag" sized dog carriers for motorcycles but I'd suspect your dogs are to big for those, and not sure how to mount 2 on the bike. Like the previous response, a rumble seat setup in the trunk might be your best option but that requires some creativity and fabrication.

Not to mention recalculating the center of balance change so it won't mess up the handling. I'd vote for a dog trailer.

Tough on you guys and the dogs. And when you say "remote" if you mean off-road that'll be really tough on the pups. I'm not sure in that scenario if a trailer is even a good idea.
You are bringing camping equipment too. I ride with a dog, I don't "pack" them.

I don't see any good solution for what you want to do. It's either the dogs or the wife.

Either dogs or wife, hmmmm some days it's a hard choice...lol

As far as a trailer, can't use one without killing the warranty, but once the warranty has run out might get a light weight trailer for dogs.

Wife on the back of the bike, jam the dogs in the car. More you load a Ural the better it rides.

+1 what Stagewex said. You ride with your dog !

That being said make sure they are ok with the sidecar and all that first.

edited: just saw your other post. looks as though the one dog is good to go.

Both dogs love to ride in sidecar, no issues there. Currently, it's either the dog(s) or the wife. Just looking for a way to take both on same trips.

Hey, my last wife was 46 years ago so I'm no expert. However, I love taking my 25# Pug Maggie for rides, she never complains, thinks I'm the greatest, etc, etc. Gotta say I've seen the light!
