As has been in the past the "First Editions" of a bike like this end up being an investment.
Having owned a number of BMW's over the years and recently selling the oldest one (1969 r60/2) I can see where someone might like the kinda old/classic look mixed into a modern bike. It's not my cup-of-tea but I predict this will be a hit for BMW.

I rather like the look of this customized model (hideous muffler, notwithstanding).

I burnt out on the retro thing. new Indians, Triumph Bonnie, PT Cruisers, New Bug, the Dodge Challenger. At least Ural's are genuine, not some designer's idea of what hipster's newest obsession will be.

Even new riders that are in the 16-17-18 Big Twin market will be looking at these.

When I attend Daytona I usually spend an entire day at the Speedway Harley Midway location. They still let you to take a bike, any bike out for an extended test ride by yourself, no need to go with a chaperoned group. Mind you they are not counting how long you are gone but in 15-20 minutes around the huge track perimeter and Daytona Airport you can really open up a bike to it's full potential. And they literally have hundreds of bikes going out simultaneously

I have not gone in 3 years but the last time I went I spent over 5 hours just riding around every model (they have a lot) possible and then a second and 3rd time trying to determine which I liked better IF I was going to buy. In the end and similar to what chaos2 says none of them had the character of the Harleys I used to own which were both Softails. Trying to be "retro" of their own "retro" bikes from even 10 years earlier. Little things like the nameplates being plastic to look like the old metal ones really bugged me, man they looked cheap. Lot of come looking plastic to. I could go on but with the exception of the motors being bigger displacement and they did run very well... the cheapness of everything surrounding all that engineering just felt soulless.
Same with the new Indian Cheif I was riding which I liked a lot until someone riding a real Indian stopped at a light next to me.

I'm not sure that's what this new Beemer is trying to do since they don't have anything similar before. I'd have to see one in person but at its very base it looks pretty clean and stripped down, a motor with 2 wheels and a handle bar. I do kinda like it.

One BMW model does come to mind for those that may remember it, the Rockster. Featured in a James Bond movie and released just after, they were marketing disasters for BMW and anyone that bought one new. Not engineering-wise or quality-wise. More about resale, no one liked them. Now years later they are having a kinda Edsel resurgence.

I don't know why but a lot of these seemed to be white:

Not that I've exerted any effort trying to find out, but do they make an R18 with a legit pillion seat? All the pictures I've seen have the bike with a solo seat. If you are trying to sell this to a younger crowd, then it seems to me the bike should comfortably accomodate a couple; and the advertising would promote that. Remember those nice people two-up on a Honda Cub. I understand they are still together.

Hey Stagewex.....That color is actually "Ivory". I own two of em...A 1999, and a 2000 model. Sure don't need two, but....can't bring myself to part with either.

I actually owned one of the R1200C E, it was the Euro Edition of the bike. I used to refer to it as "The Delorean Bike". It didn't handle, it was not fast, but it was unique looking (sort of) :sarcasm:. Not a bad bike but absolutely no WOW FACTOR.
