Saddam Hussein's Ural?

Post by The White Rabbit » Sat Jan 18, 2020 11:01 pm

I visited a custom motorcycle shop in Columbia, TN a couple of days ago and in a back room, along with 50 other bikes, was a Ural said to be one of three owned by Saddam Hussein. I don't understand why the bike is so beat if he owned it as I can't see Saddam as being much of a Ural rider. (Maybe that's why it's banged up? ) The bike has the "Police" on the tub and I added a shot of the license plate. The shop was totally cool. It was primarily Harleys but they had a good selection of other cycles. The owner runs this shop out of love and it's apparent once you walk through the door. Maybe someone has already posted these photos and if so, sorry for the duplication.

Last big military order was from Iraq. A few were "liberated" right out of the crate they say by our troops.
Is this one of them... who knows?

Looking at the photos my guess is that it is a CSMI (Ural Importer from 1992-2003) Tourist with homemade bumpers on the sidecar and engine guard on the bike. The air cleaner has been changed to one from either a Wolf or a Cobra.
We may not have it all together,
But, together we have it all.

Somewhere, someplace, deep in the Ural files, I remember seeing the production numbers for Ural back into the 60's through the 80's. Like Stagewex said, Iraq ordered over 100,000 bikes for the military. Again, if I'm remembering all this right, the order wasn't completely filled before Sadaam went down.

Tubarick has an Iraq bike that came back in 100+ pieces and was reassembled here, though I think it's been getting lonely since he upgraded.

I just worked on Ricks engine so his bike should be up and running soon.
Vance Blosser and myself were at the factory in March of 2005 and there were still some of the Iraq bikes there ready to ship as soon as they were paid for.
Our guys did get their hands on a few of them. I actually sent some parts to them so they could get them running. Here are a couple of pictures they sent me. The bikes are a combination of new and old parts. The order was for a total of 1500 bikes.

Iraq ordered about 1500 bikes in exchange for oil. Non were allowed for military use due to the embargoes in place. The 1500 ordered were ostensibly destined for the post office and health services. About 500 bikes were actually delivered before the invasion. All of them used that hi capacity air filter as used in some export and later models. In Europe they are known as the 'Iraqi Post Office Bikes' and many undelivered ones were sold off to the home and export markets after the time of the 750cc engines introduction to the USA
I can't tell whether the bike in the photos is genuine or not but it is quite possible. 'Bring backs' from Iraq by US servicemen have featured on here a few times and I think several owners still run them.

The Iraqi bikes had aftermarket aluminium cylinders and airbox made by KBMTS http://kbmtc.ru/Filtr%20bozdyxa.htm From memory the flywheel was modified in some manner as was the crankshaft. Possibly a 720 crankshaft with 650 pistons.

I've seen two of the famed Iraqi rigs. Parts bin specials to the extreme! Not sure if by design or necessity. Surprised Rick hasn't jumped in, he has a ton of pictures and stories about his... I especially like the part that it was shipped in pieces via US Mail...
