Said Goodbye To My Dog Today

Post by chopfather » Wed Oct 23, 2019 12:36 pm

I had to make the very tough call to have my 11 year old female pit bull put down today. She was a great member of the family and brought us countless great memories of her antics. I can't believe how hard this has hit me, she had some health issues and I thought I had prepared myself for this moment but I was wrong.
She wasn't much of a sidecar pup but I think I'm gonna go take a therapeutic ural ride and try to remember Maddie and console myself.

I'm really sorry. It's one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. I'm sorry.

You have my deep sympathy.

They wrangle their way into your heart and never let go.

Just remember, they got there for a reason, all the good time and times with them are with us until we pass on.

I had one ride shotgun with me in my service truck for a while after she was gone, She knew I needed some more time so out of the corner of my eye was a ghostly dog when I was alone.

I lost my pup Bruno, a black lab under bad circumstances, never even got to say goodbye or bury him. It took me 27 years before I got another dog, Henry. He then died at the age of 4 unexpectedly due to a blood disease and thanks to me he suffered the last week of his life as we tried to save him. I had to let him go, I was with him and I brought him home and buried him. Both of those animals were very dear to me and in my heart.

Treasure the time you have. NEVER miss the opportunity to say goodbye. Know when to let them go.

As for me, I have Benny. I don't know if I'll ever let another dog in like Bruno or Henry and maybe Benny senses that. He's a good dog, but he is not truly MY dog in the full sense of the word.

I feel your pain and can only offer my condolences. If anyone tells you "Dude, it was just a dog" Don't get angry, just pity them as they'll never understand.

We went through the same terrible time last month when we lost our Jack Dog. His health had started failing & a few months later he was gone.
At 72 it was an experience I've had several times, & although painful every time - I realize ALL DOGS ARE pretty wonderful - & getting another, soon as you can, will do a dog good to have a home, & give you someone to feed & care for. Then soon the depression begins to go away, and a new chapter & relationship flourishes. We are really enjoying our new pal CHARLIE, he is diabolically smart - & makes us laugh.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I always thought I would have pointers or some other hunting dogs in my life, but then two pit bull mixes wiggled in and now I wouldn't have it any other way.

I send my sincerest condolences in the loss of Maddie. I fear the day I lose my 12-year-old Pug, Pugsley! A therapeutic Ural ride should help you, at least a little.

Too bad dogs only live about 10 years, they become family. I recently tripped over my oldest, ailing 11yr old German Shepherd in the yard on a moon less night. She died a couple days later

Thanks so much to all of you. I went on a ride around some of the local back roads and then spent some time out in the garage working on a few projects to clear my head. The worst part was waiting for my two 16 year old children to get home and break the news to them, they were so young when we got Maddie that they can't really remember a time without her. they were pretty upset but understood that it was the best thing under the circumstances.
I'm sure that soon I'll be ready to rescue another furry friend from the animal shelter so that he or she can rescue me when I'm in need.
