An old friend of mine was William "Billy" Bates; he used to tell me how his dad always addressed him as Master Bates.

Heard my father tell a story that back in the early 50's, he was in an all boys school. There was a dance with an all girl's school. My father's friend introduced my father to some girls... "Do you know my friend here master Bates" My father said he was tongue tied and didn't know how to reply.

True story

Cheers,
Bill Bates (no relation) 😄

Reminds me of a Chief Master Sergeant Dick I meet in the Air Force forty years ago. The correct way to address him was 'Chief Dick'.

In the moving business Ive had a few Customers...
Harold Richard Head....His family called him Harry Dick Head.

Got off on the wrong foot with a Commercial Client we serviced every friday night. I had always met Julio but one friday there was a new person and he signed the order "Dick Creamer." I said wait , you spelled your last name wrong. Isn't it Cramer. ? NOPE ITS CREAMER he yelled. I asked him where my friend Julio was ? He said he fired him. Oh $#!+. It just got worse from there...

I've moved Joe Balls, a lady cop named Mary Jane Fink. Ellen Kuntz, Richard Ringer.
Heck, you should hear what they call me at work

My boss hated it when I called him Dick.

Maybe because his name was Frank. . . . . .

I knew a MSgt Dick when I was in the USAF...I never really liked him, but once I was accused of something I didn't do and he stood up for me, defended me and told the CO I was a good NCO and would never do what I was accused of. Case closed.

I never thought bad of him again. Even with that last name.

I'm gonna assume it was the same guy you knew and he got promoted...

Soooooone of my best friends last name is Dicks. He has an uncle who’s legal first name is Harry. Dude just owns it, no nickname to avoid awkwardness. He’s hilarious

However the best story was my buddies wedding. One day pre wedding my buddy looks at me and says “you know what Her last name is right”.

“No” says I.

“Wetmore” says he.

Then laughter ensued because of the way wedding announcements are worded here in America. It would read....

“Please join us for the Wetmore Dicks wedding”

 No joke. Can’t make this $#!+ up

Steve Cox, and Mike Dixx, were in my rank in high school band. As the rank captain, and 'right guide', it was my job to maintain the distance between my rank, and the rank in front of us. It was also my job to keep the rank in a straight line ... Steve, and Mike, were always either ahead, or lagging behind, and I was constantly barking out, "Coxx up, Dixx up!"
