Agreed Reline should not be exceeded (normally, passing situation and you need the go pup then all bets are off)

But it should do redline even if we don't want to stay there. And it is on the Emissions sticker as 6200 for 2019. Did that change from previous years?

Except for short spurts, I'm not comfortable pushing my 2018 M70 over 70 mph and that's around 700 rpm short of redline. Other than slightly different pistons, 2018's and 2019's are mechanically identical, if I had a 2019 I wouldn't be comfortable pushing it any more than that.

Sort of on topic - New here and picking up tricks where I can.

What RPMs do these bikes like? I know a lot of folk drove the Royal Stars I came off like Sunday goin' to church like, and I drove them hard with fast wind outs, as well as reprogramming to a higher cut out. I also found that the bikes had a strong fourth gear - I could pretty much cross entire states on the two lane without changing gears, except for the occasional speed trap.

They're not too picky, but 3500 to 4200 seems to be the sweet range.

Try to lug them like a big bore cruiser, or wind them out like a 4 cylinder, and one is likely to be disappointed. I try to avoid under 2000 rpm, or over 5000 rpm for most circumstances.

Also keep in mind these are partially splash lubricated.

Don't lug up hill and don't lug ever up hill and hot. It will do 55 in 3rd (that looks to be around 5100 with 60 at 5500.)

With the R80 I could not figure out why it had gears at all as it did not care, until I loaded it up and then I found out.

Ergo, the Ural is a loaded R80GS.

I went through the chart done by Manscout (https://sovietsteeds.com/forums/viewtop ... 25&t=48606) and then added 5% as his was a Patrol (and assuming 19" Tires)

That puts 3rd gear at 5750 at 60 mph. Still what I think is a safe (short periods of time) away from 6200.

75 in 4th would be 5565. I can see how Heidel got 83 on theirs (forget cT or ?) Certainly pushing it but at about 400 rpm per 5 mph, that is still a tad under 6200 rpm.

Put it in the for what its worth category as each will decide whats right for themselves. I think of them as tools and its there to use, if needed. Don't do it unless you need to.

I remember reading somewhere that my max RPM is 5600 on my 2014 M70. That would certainly be less than the 6200 on your sticker. I can't remember now where I read it, but the reasoning was that the maximum speed for the 2014 Urals is 70 mph in 4th gear, which I think equates to 5,600 rpm.

Older Urals were recommended to stay at 55 mph or lower. This was before some advancements in the final drive, I think. My M70 easily has enough power to cruise at 70, but the gas mileage is terrible at that speed. I've got a little over 20,000 km on it now without any major issues.

The problem I see with extended operation at high RPM is engine lubrication and crankshaft failure, the final drive to a much less degree.
I don’t think that the listed maximum RPM is meant to be the maximum cruising RPM, just the maximum intermittent RPM, IIRC the valves start to float at the maximum RPM listed for a given year Ural engine, it cannot be good for the engine to run it for extended periods under those conditions.
I don’t know about the fuel injected models, but I’ve found that my older 750 engine’s like a cruising RPM of around 4500 or less for extended periods, and higher RPMs intermittently.
Higher than that, and I believe the big end bearings start to starve for oil.

I don't know what will go but clearly Ural feels 70 mph is maximum sustained and even then you are supposed to take a break of (15 minutes?)

Frankly that sounds like an oil heat limit but that is speculations. Heidle had one up to 83 mph.

The bottom line is that you go no faster than you need to and its safer bet for longevity.

In my case, local highway is 65 and you want to maintain speed of at least that and closer to 70 so you are not a road stop. After 30 minutes while the speed is still posted the same traffic is not an issue and terrain steps in as well as passing lanes.

I have used max rpm a few time when I needed to get it going as fast as it would go as soon as it could do it. If it my butt on the line I will risk issues with the engine though I doubt that will do you in.

Its one of the reasons I use synthetic. That extra capability may be what stops an oil breakdown that would take out the engine.

Its also a good reason not to do max rpm regardless, don't use it unless you need it.
