China Ural and other hacks. . .

Post by DanKearney » Fri Oct 05, 2018 10:52 am

I'm out in China for a couple of weeks and right now I am attending an MC rally near Wuyuan, Jiangxi province for a couple of days.

I was expecting to see old Chang Jiangs (Which I did), but I also came across a fairly new Ural Gear-Up, ridden by Mr Zhang (Attachment 1). He paid just over $30,000 USD for this baby. They've got a 100% tariff on imported bikes in China. Yikes! He bought it from the Ural dealer over in Shanghai. That shop used to be a rebuilt Chang Jiang shop when I last visited it in 2009. Now it's Ural of China. He's got an interesting cylinder head guard sort of thing attached to the motor. (Attachment 2) I forgot to ask him what it does.

I saw a couple of the new Chang Jiang 750cc Inline twins as I came into town, but wasn't able to get a pic. Hoping to run into them again tomorrow.

Also giving an appearance was one of those Jialing 650cc hacks that the PLA uses. (Attachments 3 & 4) It's got that steerable sidecar wheel. It's a funky rod and cable contraption that looks more complicated than it is worth. Rider wasn't around so I couldn't ask him about it.

I also saw a little, I think, 250cc Shineray with a small tub attached. Pretty nice paint scheme on it. (attachments 5, 6, & 7)

Might get some more interesting pics tomorrow, and will post any sidecar related ones.

Cheers,

Dan K.

Wow, great report. I'm blown away by the 100% tariff on foreign motorcycles. They send stuff out but don't want anything coming in. Nice pictures

Well, in Costa Rica its 35 to 50% import tax on Ural and 100% on carburator spares (the 2018 are sold for 25.000+ $) I paid in 2013 6.500$ tax on my already used Patrol.
29 years ago it was 100% on any bike above 200ccm.

The cylinder protector of the Ural is laughable....ridiculous. That may confirm Mike the canadian miner, who walks now around with 3,5kg titanium in skull and shoulder. His left cylinder that took the hit had 0,5mm valve gap, when I got her to run again. Bike is still running, such a skinny cylinder protector would not have made any difference.

The about 60+ imported Jailing with the steered sidecar wheel are very popular in the German and Austrian 3 wheeler forum for their handling. Just not that much their electric. The new European exhaust rules do not permit their import into EU anymore.

What is to expect from the Mash (beige/brown) rig, I do not know.

Cool. The Jialing outfit has been on my low powered radar for awhile. (NA in the US). Rummer had it some LEO's are using them. Ever seen any wide spread commercial use over there?

I don't think that is a engine guard.
I think it is a grill for food :)

You know i think the Russians need to make the Chinese do fair trade and lower those ridiculous high tariffs. sound like a familiar scenario? :boogie:

A grill for food: That is a good one! In deed I have warmed up a sandwich like that.

Might be a "package" rack. Some of the Paris Dakar solo BMWs had them to hold spare fuel/water containers. Seems unlikely, given the hack. Lools none too stout though.

No new pics to post. Yuan and I hung around for a couple of hours this morning, and then left for our next destination.

Did spot one more Ural though, a classic black Retro.

I was surprised at all the high dollar BMWs in attendance. This is a rich man's hobby over hear. Ducati too was represented. Most of all the new Benelli 500 Adv bike and the 650 CFMoto Adv were nice looking quality packages. We might see both stateside.

I was happy to come across a couple of Zongshen RX3s, and had good conversations with the owners. I'll be riding mine to Inuvik next Summer.

Cheers,

Dan K.

That "rack" looks more like a heat guard, just enough to keep something from touching the cylinder.
Still like Charlie Chaplin's 1940 talkie "The Great Dictator"; had to abandon it as the inspiration for the theme of my Ural's paint scheme. People can't seem to tell satire from support. Too much public education.
