My favorite UDF!

Post by jaybird » Sat Aug 04, 2018 11:26 pm

My favorite UDF comes from someone here in the US, that is from the FSU or some other Socialist Utopia.
No "What year is it" or "Is that an Indian" or "Is that a Triumph", I mean, really, WTF?
No, they usually either have a nice story and a reminisce about the old days or their Grandmother (todays UDF)/Grandfather, or some other family member riding them around in the sidecar, nice.
OR the more humorous UDF, when they start out with a "That's from my country", then reminisce a little, and wind it up with a certain look, and say "POS, Why you buy?"
Not sure which I like more.

one Russian drove drunk. blocked the street crossing with his car and both doors open for to take dozens of photos with his short skirted (& drunken too) female companianship...in the middle of a typical tropical down pour.
I just was mumfing my lunch under the roof of the soda (street food place) and couldn't stop to laugh.

Cyndy and I stopped at the local ice cream palace and got mobbed by a group of Browies. Took so long to get everybody an "on the seat and in the car" photo that the senior mom-in-charge brought us a couple of milkshakes. A good time was had by all. :)

My favorite was an elderly fellow who thought my GU was a BMW. Told me a story about his older brother, who helped push Rommel out of North Africa. The Germans abandoned scores of R75's and Zundapps in their retreat. They were prized toys for the allies, but many were booby trapped. This fella said his brother would offer an Arab small amount of food or money to try to start one. If it exploded, no problem. Plenty more bikes and arabs!

I don't have a lot but our neighbor of 30 years who our kids grew up together with....we saw him at the gas station and he was so enthralled. Complaining his spouse wont get on the Harley no more and he could see her in the tub with him and how he could afford an entry level and Wow just what him and his marriage needed.

Well a few weeks later I found a listing for a Ural so I called and left a message to my friend.. I got a response from his wife. " Hi Tim. This is Kim. Danny does not need another motorcycle or anything ever any more. In fact I hate his Harley and wish he would get rid of it. Thank you but no Thanks."

Is there such a thing is MUE ? Missing the Ural Experience.

I have a few stories too, but the most interesting was on a ride called a 3x3x3. We were touring around Iowa and we all stopped for lunch at a local drink/dining establishment.

Unbeknown to us it also was a stop for a local poker run that day too!...the place got inundated with a few hundred plus motorcyclist with about 99% of em being Harleys in about 10 minutes time with more coming....Wellll we decided it was getting a little crowded, finished our food, and proceeded to meander out to group up to leave... (our group had about 8 people approx altogether I think)

Of course there's one in every group that's not at all bashful and we had em... well with the crowd getting off there bikes and walking past our bikes, there started to be a crowd of about 15 onlookers over our bikes..

and this person(name protected) from our group says in a real loud voice, "You'd best not be getting any Harley drooool on our bikes now" of we all had a good laugh on that, and exchanged pleasantries...I don't think Ill ever forget that moment ... 8)

That drooool troll must have been in our groop when the Scottish soldiers banged out my eyelight and spline April 1983 in Hannover...The last I remember was that I said : "Thomas, let's leave it as it is and walk away. This will turn out into trouble."

Yesterday, I was leaving the parking lot when a KLR rider was coming in. He got so excited seeing my Ural that he turned around and followed me. He said something from the lane next to me when I was stopped, and then followed me to my customer's house (about 2 miles away). That was plain fun.

I went to a small local Farmers Market and parked my three-wheeled wonder out front. Come back shortly and several old guys (at least older than 63) are standing around it; conversation resembles this...

“What is it?” A Ural.

“Where does it come from?” Russia

“Do you like it?” I really do, but I think I was ripped off.

“You do? Why?” Because when I bought it, I was promised a Russian bride with every bike. She never arrived.

Laughter ensues, then one guy says, “You got the better deal.”

:D

I've often got: "What is it?" Ural.

"Where's it from?" Clue's in the name. Ural mountains?

Nope .... blank

Russia?

"Good god!" (Or similar exclamation.)

"Has it been rebuilt" or "how long did it take you to rebuild it?"

No it's new.

"They're still being made? Good god!!" (Again) :D

Just remembered something, sometime during my last trip, I was on a dual carriageway, inside lane, a big black limo with tinted windows cruised past in the second lane, then slowed down and "backed up" to where I was, and kept pace for a few seconds for a good look over. I presume, couldn't see anybody inside cos of the windows. :D

I have a visceral aversion to drivers in the adjacent [passing] lane who intentionally slow to pace me whilst I'm on two or especially three wheels. They're blocking a potential escape path, IMO, as well as annoying the following traffic who are now forced to reduce their speed. I understand that a Ural is not a common sight, but that doesn't give Johnny Gawker the right to endanger me and others via UDF at 50 mph.

An imperceptible movement of my throttle hand causes just enough of a speed reduction to give the staring driver the perception that he is now pulling well ahead of me, when in fact I'm slowing and his speed remains unchanged. To date, folks seem to get the hint because no one has slowed even more to reestablish a parallel position next to me.
