Off road riding areas around Carson City NV?

Post by jcook004 » Wed Apr 25, 2018 5:52 pm

I'm planning a trip to Carson city NV, sometime mid August. I'm going to spend a couple weeks with my daughter and Grand kids, and I think it would be fun to trailer the Ural along with me, and do some riding with them. Does anyone have any advice on fun places to go? Some off road, gravel road, dirt road type riding? Nothing too technical, just "off the beaten path" style riding.
Thanks for any advice !!

There should be plenty of places to ride on BLM land unless posted as long as you stay on 2 wheel track dirt roads. It's not like Ill. and ky. where most of the land is owned by someone or a wildlife refuge.
You might look into the Virginia City area. Lots of old mines and little roads.

If you get a chance head up to Gerlach ( if it is not burning man time ). Eat and fill up there then head into the Black Rock Desert. Nothing but gravel roads all the way to Oregon! Great ride. Bring some extra gas. That is when I wish my GU had a gas tank like my GSPD! 9 gallons. I keep wondering if I could get a GSPD type tank to fit. You will find no trouble finding some great roads to ride. Some are a bit dusty.

Hi Jody,

Short rides around Carson City can include Fifth Street out to the Carson River, Six Mile Canyon from Dayton to Virginia City and the twisty down into Washoe Valley, Lakeside Dr from Carson to Washoe, Hwy 50 over Spooner Summit to South Shore or Incline Village, Kings Canyon and Old Kings Canyon, and Jacks Valley Road to Genoa and over the Kingsbury grade into South Lake Tahoe.

August it's gonna be hot and dry. Any travels west will be up into the Sierra's and higher cooler elevations. All the above suggestions are shady tree lined roads where some turn to dirt or a few miles of wandering curious off shoots to explore.

Longer rides can include South 395 to Topaz Lake, Walker, Bridgeport and possibly Bodie Ghost Town. ☆☆☆☆☆. To the East on Hwy 50 is Fort Churchill and Lahontan Reservoir and into Fallon. Of course dont forget the "Worlds Loneliest Road". Google it.

Latest and greatest restaurant in Carson is Sassafras. Check it out. Have fun with your Grandkids and exploring Carson area.

Thanks guys, This is great information! I'm really looking forward to this trip. I hadn't even heard of the "Fly Geyser" in the town of Gerlach. I'd like to visit that, but I'm reading that it's closed to the public. Looks like plenty of great riding, maybe two weeks won't be enough.... 8)
Thanks again!
