I Bought An RPOC Today

I swear I didn't mean to do it, but I bought a Russian Piece Of Crap today.

I saw the post in the Black Market about a Craigslist ad for a '99 Tourist in Norfolk, Virginia. (viewtopic.php?f=4&t=47596). That's six miles from my house. I thought, "Screw it; I'll go check it out", so the missus and I rode the Mobile Chernobyl over to see it. The seller was FASCINATED with the Chernobyl. His bike was... well, take a look for yourself:

He REALLY wanted to sell it and I kinda wanted to buy it, but my wife kept "egging me on" to buy it, so I did.

Wait... I've got more images of the Carnage...

Looks like a fun project. Appears to have newer carbs, but old alternator/ ignition.

Welcome to the world of the 650's!

Here's the plan: get it running tomorrow. Once it runs, I'll tear it completely apart, order any parts I need and new fasteners. I'll remove the corrosion, scuff sand the salvageable paint, and rough-up the chrome for painting.
I plan to paint the entire bike a desert tan color (I'm leaning towards 'Cummins Beige').

Once I get it all back together, I think I might offer it to my father-in-law. I've been "encouraging" (riding) him to buy a Ural for a while now. If he's not interested, I might just sell it for whatever I put into it, if I can get that much. Not particularly interested in making a profit. Just want to learn and be creative.

Lokiboy said that I'm on my way to becoming a "Mini-Van", which I take as an amusing compliment. I say 'amusing' because I don't have room for thirty Ural's at MY house!

Looks like someone got busy with rattle can flat black. There is a lot of former chrome on that rig. And...uhh...how do I put this?...

Where's the tub?

So, 650 owners, tell me what I need to do to this sucker! I'm thinkin' replace the Russian Grenade Alternator and upgrade the ignition. I'd like to ditch the friction damper and replace it with Sean's R3W hydraulic damper. Guess I gotta make me a Me-Pi drum brake adjusting tool now. The parking brake is missing. Is it worth replacing? Is the airbox on this bike any good or is there a better design out there? Give me your highly opinionated, borderline offensive, highly entertaining, marginally effective advice!

Yeah... about that.
I'll likely look elsewhere for a tub. Maybe I'll turn this "sidecar" into some kind of weird "Van Le - class" creation. We'll see.

Oh...there it is... most of it anyway. Guess we were posting at the same time.

Well, I was posting and I imagine you were questioning you judgement. Heh, heh, heh...

See if you cannot find an old coffin to put on the chassis.

A '99 is the same as a 2000 so same as my rig. Dead simple. Check EI rotor. Might be loose. If so just needs a washer to tighten up.

Check EI rotor.
Sounds Spanish. "El RoTOR!". I like it already.
Thanks for the tip.

Check gear, nut and cotter pin.
I assume that these items are on the alternator itself?
I plan to upgrade to Denso.
