Yeah...nice paint job JohnBG!!! But I don't see the freshly painted "no tool box" gas tank :? :P

Ha, Glen+2! Well played. Now, if I could just perfect the bike-to-hack 'Cone of Silence', I wouldn't have to buy a pricey communicator.

While I agree that a "combat survivor" look would be phenomenal, I really would like the practical utility of a dry trunk. I'm currently reaching out to local artisans with sheet metal bending and welding skills that are superior to mine, which are quite modest. Hopefully I can get this tub rebuilt. I'm also looking for tubs wrecked in the front, to "Siamese" onto mine, which is bad in the back. One way or another, I'll get a good hack mounted (and probably a utility bed, too!).
Okay if you want a tub with dry storage, which cart would not provide.....Try looking into mounting a construction site "job box." essentially a giant bin with locking lid which is designed to be dry. Just remove wheels and mount.

Turn it into a 'Predator'...

You wont need a tub, just a built-up platform for supporting the modified exhaust, two NATO gas cans, 50 feet of chain, an axe, a sledgehammer, 40 pounds of tools, a spare wheel and tire, a large battery, flares, a shovel, a spare final drive, a come-along, a chainsaw, and a winch.

If you dont know what the predator is, search the forum...

Name on plate: prdatr2 (if it will fit!)

And welcome to the world of dual Ural ownership!

There are companies that sell actual military grade flat enamel paints on ebay in several 'official' colors, including desert sand, cammo, and OD green.

Just FYI, for whatever its worth.

Here's one:

The Gilespie Coatings, GCI, are made in Longview Texas....its good stuff.

I actually want to use a paint with a satin finish. Satin looks somewhat military/tactical, but resists grease/rust/stains far better than a flat finish.
I actually bought five different rattle-cans of satin paints today, to help me narrow down exactly what hue I want.

I think I want the frame and bodywork to be just a shade darker than the powertrain. Van brought up a good point to me: whatever color I choose, I just gotta make sure that the paint is gasoline resistant. It'd suck to splash some gas on the tank, only to have the paint "melt" off!

Turn it into a 'Predator'...
Such a bad-a$$ idea. Since I'm ultimately planning to 'gift' my handiwork to my father-in-law, I want to make sure that it's got a functional sidecar, but that doesn't mean I can also make a cargo box or an awesome rack system to store badassery!

On another note, I've decided to register the bike in Virginia, since that's where it's titled. All of my other vehicles have Illinois tags, since I'm an Illinois resident (and, being registered in Illinois, I don't have to take them in for annual inspections or pay personal property tax!). I was going to get 'OK WWID' on the Virginia license plate, because I thought it would be funny to have two Urals with the same license plate.

Now, however, I think I've decided to go with Virginia's "Don't Tread on Me" plate because I like the look. Since I lose an available character space with this plate, I'll have to come up with a clever, relevant five-character plate. I've thought-up some contenders, but I'm sure you guys can out-clever me.

Or split the difference with a pickup bed *and* a dry box in half of it that can be lifted out. Kind of like the tool boxes that sit forward in the beds of pickup trucks. Full sized pickup bed when you want it; dry box in 1/2 of it until you lift it out.

I'm really enjoying the outpouring of ideas, fellahs. In the meantime, I'm still trying to figure out what color I want for the body and frame.
2017-04-03 16.02.05.jpg
After these two strips dry, I've STILL got two more shades to lay down. I still think I want to go darker than that 'Cummins Beige' valve cover in the background.

Perhaps this unlabled, not-yet-dry Rust-Oleum 'Dark Taupe' satin will be a winner. We shall see. We... shall... see...

There's a certain kinda irony (and optimism) with painting a bike that doesn't even run!

All those would look VERY cool if you did a desert camo theme...

I'd like to justify painting it first by pointing out that I don't have a garage and this bike, which will "live" outdoors, has a lot of exposed primer. Primer without a topcoat will just wick water down to the metal and cause additional corrosion. I'd LIKE to justify it for that reason, but in reality, I just want to see how it looks!

Perhaps at some point in the future I'll do something like a desert version of this...

But, for now, bi-chromatic is the 'look' I want to see.
