I named my bikes "the bmw" and "the Ural" If I had your new beast I'd probably call it "the crappy Ural"

Rusty Ruble. At today's price = 1.8 cents.

Edit for price correction.

I am jealous! That bike about perfect fits the requirements that I have/want for a project. My idea/concept...I love the folding utility/hacks/tubs that they use in the factory and a few that were imported. So my idea was to fidn an only 1WD (tourist) remove the hack tub and then replace it with a frame of a folding garden cart. example cart--I found some good sizes before but this may not be the exact size.

I think it would be fun to make a Ural pickup of sorts. Since it would be a Ural truck I wouldn't care about looks just functionality. Heck you could even haul 8' 2x4's by folding the front and back down. After that I was thinking of adding some of the "unique" cast parts from Russia (gas caps/damper knob, timnig cover) just for the heck of it. Figure that may be fun since I haven't see anyone add those cast parts to a bike in the US.

mcj115, you've got some great ideas. Perhaps, while I restore this cancerous tub, I'll install some kind of expanded-metal carriage, like your proposed Tractor Supply cart.
Screenshot_2017-04-03-09-44-10-1.png
On another note, I've decided to register the bike in Virginia, since that's where it's titled. All of my other vehicles have Illinois tags, since I'm an Illinois resident (and, being registered in Illinois, I don't have to take them in for annual inspections or pay personal property tax!). I was going to get 'OK WWID' on the Virginia license plate, because I thought it would be funny to have two Urals with the same license plate.

Now, however, I think I've decided to go with Virginia's "Don't Tread on Me" plate because I like the look. Since I lose an available character space with this plate, I'll have to come up with a clever, relevant five-character plate. I've thought-up some contenders, but I'm sure you guys can out-clever me.

RPOC is only really recognizeable to those of us who lovingly work on them.

Kind of hard to come up with a good one using only 5 caricatures. Maybe "TR-POD" for tripod? Just choose something quick, I'm running out of pennies. :-D

Reminds me of my original '98 Tourist that I painted Desert Tan. Although mine was in a little better shape. Good luck with it. A little TLC with the wrenches, some parts, sheet metal work, and a whole lotta elbow grease, you'll have a decent rig there.

That's it, John! That's what I'm going for (except I'm gonna paint the wheels, frame, engine, and EVERYTHING that khaki/sand/beige color).

I was just thinking, given that the sidecar is in rough shape, it makes it a good candidate for a WWII veteran look complete with bullet holes in the tub.

While I agree that a "combat survivor" look would be phenomenal, I really would like the practical utility of a dry trunk. I'm currently reaching out to local artisans with sheet metal bending and welding skills that are superior to mine, which are quite modest. Hopefully I can get this tub rebuilt. I'm also looking for tubs wrecked in the front, to "Siamese" onto mine, which is bad in the back. One way or another, I'll get a good hack mounted (and probably a utility bed, too!).

Also one more thought, and or quick hint/tip. Where there is rust on the Chrome and or stainless steel...a wad of aluminum foil dipped in a bowl of water with some scrubbing does wonders! Try this on the handle bars and mounts or on the air cleaner/nuts.
