Where the hell did I go wrong?
That made me chuckle, Mike.

Rob: THANK YOU for that avalanche o' advice! Much appreciated. As for nicknames, while 'Rusty' is definitely appropriate, I want to try to tie in the bike's Russkie heritage. I'm sure we'll come up with something. 'Til inspiration strikes, I guess I'll just refer to it as The RPOC.
the other day you said the guy wanted $1200,hope you chiseled him down some !
I did. He was quite eager to sell.
let us know when or if you fire it up, boy would that be a plus
I'll keep you posted. In fact, this thread could end up being my "RPOC tear-down and build-up" thread. I was gonna try to start it today, but I chose to "play hooky" and rode with two other Ural riders, one a "new" rider. Now I just feel like poking at the RPOC with a stick.

Oh, hey, check out these amazing tools that came with the bike:

I pulled the valve cover to both check valve clearances and just generally see what's going on in there.

Looks like oil changes weren't really a priority. Lots of sediment.

While I had the valve cover off, I decided to see what the Cummins Beige would look like in the, uh, 'flesh-tone'.

I like it!

The component removal continues...

That's enough for today (which was almost nothing, really :? ).

Now, instead of rusting away in some Non-Uralista's yard, it can rust away in a true Uralista's yard.

Even the tools are rusted! The Rusted Piece of Crap is consistent if nothing else!

Watching!

I'm intrigued that you know the word "Tupperware" in the US.

Like the beige too.

Shoot! I know at least twenty-five other words in the U.S. and a few words in some other countries, too! :D

I totally agree with Snakeoil on long distance, they aren't fast but I've put in several hundred miles in a day without problem. Sure the more modern can go quicker, but if you're not in a hurry the 650 seems to do just fine. Multi-day trips will start this year now that my bike is well sorted.

The brake cable modifications allow me to lift the rear tire off the ground using the front brake. It was a "oh wow!" moment when the front nosed down, gave me a flashback to breaking horses as a kid.

I thought the fastener variations were deliberate, lets you use the stock toolkit if one side is 12mm and the other is 13mm.

Controls are 25mm, but a 1" bar can be installed with minimal hassle. I put bar risers for 1" bars on mine and they were able to hold the stock bars without problem.

Depending on the final product, I was thinking "Oxidation Sensation". JM ¢¢.

Well, so far I've got 'Urban Decay', 'Corroded Cossack', 'RUSTssian', 'Rusty', 'Rustin' Russian', 'Ржавый ковш - Rust Bucket', 'консервная банка - Tin Can', and the 'Oxidation Sensation'. I'm really liking the rhyming alliteration of your contribution, Glennn, but I'd like to work the Russian heritage in there. I dunno; I'm drawin' a blank!

I love it!

Your bike, but the name has to roll off your tongue imho. I think back to Davy Crocket's rifle Betsy or BB's guitar Lucille. Maybe pick a Russian word witg a nice ring to it and relates to the bike. What are the Russian words for:
Saved
Rescued
Survivor
Rusty or corroded
Bad decision
Therapy

Or since you claim that the wife made you buy it, why not name it after her? Is there a Russian equivalent for her name?

Or taking a completely different direction and call it Boris and put his picture on the nose of the tub, whatever that turns out to be.

Oh wait!! How about his last name...

BADENOV (bad enough)

Not a bad idea. My wife is 'Grace', which makes the name 'DIS-Grace' a natural. "De-krep-yt Dis-Grace'. It DOES roll off the tongue a little easier than 'The Iron (Oxide) Curtain', but Mike's suggestion captures the Russian heritage and the soddy shape of the bike with an amusing twist. Perhaps there's a fourth word that rhymes with 'oxide' or "curtain' that would give the nickname a little more "flow"?

So many good/clever/innovative ideas in the forum. They're what keep me coming back!

EDIT - Since I'm painting the bike in a desert motif, perhaps 'Desert DisGrace' in a faux Cyrillic, like this:

DЭSЭЯҬ DЇSGЯДҪЭ

or

DЭSЭЯҬ DЇSGЯДҪЭ
ҐӉЄ ЇЯФИ (ФӼЇDЭ) ҪЦЯГДЇЍ

I'm likin' where this is heading!
