I know you just said you were in Illinois visiting family, not sure where but the town where I grew up has a similar place. Wide selection of bears, ciders, meads, and wines.

What a day (technically three) of riding! All of the work on the Patrol paid off. It dispelled a lot of myths for me about 650 Urals (ineffective brakes, low power, etc.), as the '01 hung with the 750's just fine and was nearly trouble-free.

Lokiboy rode Erika in from Yorktown and we met-up with fellow Gordonsvillain, Rollo1956, who guided us to the Graves Mountain Lodge in Syria, Virginia, where the Colonial Virginia Tour of classic motorcycles was to commence Saturday morning.

On the way to the Lodge, Rollo1956 introduced us to the "Criglersville Car w@$#"...
-

-
We toured the Charlottesville area on Friday, with twelve hours (!) of riding.

Today, we joined with Festis to participate in the the Colonial Virginia Tour, exploring the back-roads of the Blue Ridge Mountains. After we had our fill of the group ride, the Ural contingent broke off to explore some challenging mountain trails.

As for Patrol mechanics, the handlebar was vibrating uncomfortably, so I ordered 25 pounds of #8 lead shot...
-

...and filled the handlebar with it.
-

-
It was quite effective.

Also, the "grenade" alternator developed an oil leak, presumably from the slipper seal on the rotating shaft.
-

-
I have a spare seal, so I guess I'll change it out (again).

Also, I think I figured out what the weird vibration/shudder/oscillation is - wheel bearings.
That's one component I have not yet evaluated.

Love the video ! .

Those early alternators are only grenades if you leave to little clearance in the gears....

I've had several fail but none grenade because I check the clearance in multiple places when the alloy cam gear is hot.....

Basic stuff here .

Alright, for all intents and purposes, I'm considering the Patrol "done" and will furthermore detail my antics with it in the "What Did You Do To Your Ural Today" thread.

That said, I do have a question about ignition timing. The Patrol has been having an inconsistent idle, with the engine sometimes revving to 2,000RPM and sometimes wanting to die, if I don't give it some throttle. Also, the exhaust still pops on each upshift, when the revs drop. I haven't been able to find any kind of intake air leak that could contribute to this, so I'm now focusing on ignition timing.

The 2001 Patrol has a Type III ignition:

-
I haven't checked the components of the ignition system itself for looseness, but I did take my trusty Snap-On timing light...
-
2019-08-21 18.20.13.jpg
-
...and checked ignition advance.
-
2019-08-21 14.33.33.jpg
2019-08-21 14.33.54.jpg
-
When I hit the arrows with the 'light, I read an advance of 1.5° at 800RPM idle and 35° at 4,500RPM. I know from reading past threads, that Nate is a big proponent of not exceeding 32° of spark advance. 1.5 degrees to 35 degrees seems like a very aggressive advance curve to me, but perhaps this is just inexperience speaking. Should I dial this back? Could this contribute to my idle and popping problems? Aside from these two issues, the bike runs great.
Thoughts from the crowd?

Full Advance Timing

Post by VWNate1 » Wed Aug 21, 2019 8:57 pm

I'd back it off to 32* all in using the TDC mark, these crank shafts can be (not are) delicate and too much advance can cause cracking of the cheeks or damage to the roller bearings in the rod bearings .

The popping out the exhaust in a well running engine is usually an exhaust leak that allows air to get sucked in during trailing throttle ~ look for fluffy black soot anywhere in the exhaust system....

I see you know the stuff to check on type 3 which is what I have on my '02. I found mine ran the best when I timed it static then bumped it up a bit at a time till the idle went smooth and the throttle response and power was good. I normally run 87 and have never had a ping or holed piston problem in 10 years.

Well, I took a detour on the 2001 and got it set up real nice. I've been enjoying it as a "daily driver". I still need to put the Mobile Chernobyl back together, so that's next on the priority list. What slowed that down was the unexpected passing of my father and me helping my mother with his estate. Finally, the last roadblock to progress is that I got my first civilian job in 26 years, as a male escort.
Yes, you read that right.
As soon as work and mom-help stabilize, I'll get the 'Chernobyl up and running, then get back on track with the '99.

Ummmmmmmmmm Ural driver and male escort. Maybe you could work the two together. I mean after all you need something unique when you are hanging out on that street corner.

All of that makes sense.... well almost all of it. :)
I am sorry to hear about your loss. That would definitely take a bit of work.
I wasn't sure if you were grouping the 2001 under the RPOC umbrella, as it were; but I did know about that beautiful burgundy babe.
Glad you are still kicking. Looking forward to when you can get things settled and put up some new pics.
