As someone who's seen a split ring rim let go I'm not sure that's too bad an idea. At the truck shop we always inflated them under an arm of the lift "just in case".

That was my first thought, I've never actually seen it happen, but I have seen the aftermath and it was UGLY.

There's a very good reason these are called "widow makers" ~ you have to be there when one lets go to understand .

When the ring lets go it's not uncommon for it to decapitate the person standing there .

When I lived on the farm and out of country it was my method to use some chain looped around ~ hardly safe but tire cages weren't common until the 1980's .

I was in the jungle at a Shell station in Guatemala in 1976, tinkering on my 1937 Harley Davidson EL when the two guys inflating a patched split rim off their truck let go, the short (under five foot tall) guy who'd been sitting on top of the tie holding the ria hose, flew 15' through the air and landed on the grass outside the paved service area, he slowly got to his feet, checked to see if any broken bones or gashes, began cursing loudly and walked over to collect the pieces and begin fitting another tube to it....

When I was a kid, I worked at a service station, remember those? we used to put split rims under the hoist when we inflated them. They weren't going anywhere when they were pressed to the floor under the lift.

Service Stations

Post by VWNate1 » Sat Aug 08, 2020 11:50 pm

AKA : Filling Stations .

I worked in one for a while, an Atlantic Richfield (now ARCO) and we had two hoists, one had no safety ratchet because it was pre WWII, one of the Mechanics parked a big American car on it, raised it up and drove two other cars under neath it, imagine out dismay the next morning when we discovered the hoist leaked and dropped the big car on top of the other two....

We never did fix that hoist properly, it would jump up to the end of it's travel suddenly and hop the car off if you weren't careful....

Most older garages and dealer shops have myriad horror stories .
