Because of the lack of dealers in my area, I tried again and again to fix my Ural myself. I've got the bike together and running again, after sitting disassembled for months, and it's running great in the first three gears. I've decided to just bite the bullet and take the bike to an independent mechanic to see if he can get the 4th gear going again. Anyone have any suggestions about warranty for parts? I know I'll have to pay for the labor. The mechanic said it's possible that Ural will want the entire gear box back and just replace the whole thing. Anyone have any experience with this?

Is it that you cannot get it into 4th gear, or is it something else? If it is not dropping into 4th it could be the adjustment at the backside of the tranny. Need more info.

I got an action camera for Christmas. Maybe later today, I'll take the Ural for a little spin and film then post the video on here so you can hear the sound it makes.

Hot dog! My Ural is now at AF1 in Austin as they are now a Ural dealership and service center. I hope to get it back in proper running order soon; it's only been about a year.

That's a great dealer. At least with Aprilias!

This thread has been a great read. I don't own one yet and this read helps me understand what I may be in for. I hope you get the bike back soon. Keep us posted and please keep posting your mis?adventures...very entertaining.

Watching.

Having watched TurTal on YouTube take a gearbox apart and back together in literally just 10 minutes, (including leaving a shaft out by mistake in reassembly, otherwise would have been 8 minutes :D ), it looks like the easiest thing in the world to fix. Or at least, get into and back together again afterwards. I.e. should be a breeze for any competent mechanic, or an amateur one even.

See also Gobium 42's videos about how the gearbox works.

PS: fourth gear ratio will be the ones right at the back.

Well, back on December 30, I wrote that I had an action camera and would take the bike out for a quick spin to record the sound made in 4th gear to post up and get some tips. I was not far from home whenever the engine just stopped and I never did get that video posted, but found out right after that a dealership in Austin was going to start carrying Ural. I got contacted by the owner of that shop and told they could help me out. So I rented a trailer and truck and hauled my Ural up to AF1 in Austin. The gear box problem turns out to be a bent shift fork and will be an easy fix. The motor crapping out turns out to be a major problem. The left cylinder had a catastrophic failure in which one of the valves made contact with the piston and put a hole in the piston. Here's pictures of the problem:

I hope the warranty covers this. I did all the maintenance on schedule, but I did it my self as there was no Ural dealership in the area after I bought the bike and the place I bought it from wouldn't even touch my bike once they sold it to me. I hope I didn't void the warranty by doing the maintenance myself. If I did, anyone know about how much this is going to cost?

Bum - valves do not normally just contact pistons - looks like the head broke off.

Alright, my Ural is about ready to come back home with me but while w@$#ing the thing, the service tech noticed that my steering damper wasn't actually attached to the bike and was defective. So, the only thing keeping me from picking it up is a new steering damper. He says it looks like it was never put on correctly and I had been riding the bike pretty much without a steering damper. The gearbox had a bent shift fork so Ural sent a brand new gearbox. The cylinder that got blown was because of a really lean condition caused by the injection not being set up properly by the "good people" [emoji19]who sold me the bike. So someone sold me a bike they didn't even take the time to properly assemble and lied about updating the fuel injection as per some service bulletin way before I bought it, then left me high and dry when I needed warranty work[emoji35]. A whole year wasted on what I assumed was a lemon but it was dealership negligence. I'm glad AF1 is now selling Ural. I know if I ever want to buy a Ducati or Triumph, I WON'T be buying it in San Antonio. So, the good news is now that the bike has a brand new gearbox, left cylinder, steering damper, and the proper fuel injection map, it's going to be like an all new bike and better than ever. Just hope that new steering damper comes in the next couple days.
