It seems I have the secret factory torque engine. I'm normally in 4th by 60-70kph and barring hills and wind that's where she'll stay. Certainly 80kph in 3rd is very rare.

She purrs along very nicely without having her neck rung.

In relation to roscoau's Fiona I may add that my Sophie gained lots of torque after 18.000km and now at 24.800km would pull out of 2000 revs in last gear if there wouldn't be that big "No, NO!" cry in my head.
With other engines I used to do it, to pull out of the deep cellar. (best sample was the Norton Commando :D :P ) After reading so many horror stories and seeing so many open engines on our Alaska trip, I manage to control my gas hand as it would become too expensive...
Urals are like good wine. Take care for them and be sensitive, they will respond accordingly...

Be nice to her, she will appreciate it with wonderful experiences on the road.

I often shift into 4th in the low 30s on flat ground at light weight and when I'm not in a hurry. Thirty mph in 4th is about 2100 rom. Olga has 23,000 km and is running strong. I can't remember if I've ever had Olga to 50 mph in 3rd. Maybe once, not sure. :?:

These engines idle at, let's say, 1000 rpm. Is idling at 1,000 rpm in 1st gear lugging the engine? No.

Is idling at 1,000 rpm in 4th gear lugging the engine? Yes. (that would be about 15 mph)

It all depends on engine load. Higher gears = higher engine load. Shift accordingly.

Climbing the hills of Orygun it's 3rd gear and I'll stay in third even and pull a steady 50 mph.

If I'm on flat terrain, I shift into 4th at 40 mph or so.

Wish I could give proper credit to whoever prepared this chart, but it was someone here on Steeds.

Chart of mph vs rpm in all gears. If your goal is 4500-5500 rpm, then read down to mph/gear.

Awesome, thanks!

What are the "Herzog" references for 3rd and 4th gear?

I stopped worrying about road speed for each gear.
Mounted a micro-tach on the left bar and simply maintain 3000-4000 rpm for maximum enjoyment.
4000+ seems more like work than fun. Could mean I'm on the wrong road.

In 2007 Ural moved to German-made Herzog timing gears and gearbox gears. Pre-2007 bikes have Russian-made timing gears and gearbox gears. Do a search on "timing gear failure" and look at some really ugly pictures from pre-2007 bikes.
