RPM in third gear at steady 50mph

Post by redtails » Sat Mar 21, 2015 5:38 pm

I've been finding myself waiting to shift into fourth and, at times, leaving the bike in third at a steady 50.

Just curious, to anyone who has had a tach, what is the RPM in third at 50mph? I'm riding a 2014 if it matters.

Thanks!

I think you are fine at 50 in third...these engines much prefer to rev freely than lug

I usually shift to fourth just past fifty. Mainly because I know I'm going to lose 5-10 mph during the shift, lol.

Unless your going up and down fairly steep hills or against a strong headwind you should be in fourth running at a steady 50 MPH. Yes these engines may prefer higher revs as opposed to being lugged but there is a happy medium. You have to go by the sound of the engine. Running at high revs all the time is not necessary and not good for it.

I have no idea what the RPM is at 50 in 3rd gear but the few times I have run mine that high it just seemed like it was wound way to tight to me. That is probably from so many years of riding bikes like Harley and Guzzi that have relatively low revving engines I guess.

If the terrain is flat, I'm in 4th at 40 with no lugging. If there is an incline, maybe 45, really steep 50. The engine is really turning fast at 50.

I go by sound too. At 50MPH I shift into 4th if I want to increase speed. Otherwise I can comfortably cruise at 45-50 in 3rd all day long and she's purring like a kitten.

45 to fourth, on flat and not increasing speed. Or something like that. :)

Mickey Sherfield in Alaska recomended me to go way up to 54mph for to shift into 4th...since then i had less trouble...
The sweet spot for a semi run in engine is 4500 to 5000 revs.
first 20 to 23 mph
second 32 to 37 mph
third 48 to 55 mph
fourth I i just use as overdrive or downhill.
When the engine wasn't run in free the bike used to dictate the speed and you better obeyed those speeds.
When trucks, buses or Sunday drivers block the road, better let them go and rest for a coffee out of the thermos bottle.
For up hill and strong front wind use those mentioned speeds and you will observe too a happy engine.
I even race now against local car drivers just for to be able to have wind over the engine....the oil temp stays low then even on the hardest long slopes.

Sophie got a free engine after 18.000km, so be patient with a new engine, there is no need to force it...not for nothing I prefer the German term "drive in" over the US term "break in".
Chuck (Loftin?) bought in Salem OR his rig the same week as I did, after a year he had a bent and seized crank shaft just because of going at too low revs...do not ask for force/torque below 4000 revs!
If you do not have a rev meter and are in doubt if you are at too low revs, then just test with a blimp on the throttle if the bike is responding well, then you are fine. if there is a dull sound or no feelable acceleration, you better go down a shift.
These engines NEED to rev. Only in the first 5000km you better go only on flat area.

You'll learn your motor in time by sound and feel. Once you got that figured out keep the motor in it's happy spot. That's what the stir stick is for.

I find that my 2014 likes fourth only after indicated 50 on the speedo (what ever speed that really is, who knows) but going into fourth any lower and it's working a bit harder to get to fifty and above. That being said, I will shift at a lower speed.....45.....if I'm not trying to get up to highway speeds to blend into traffic.

Same here. On my '12 50 in 4th is a little sluggish on the uptake but OK for flat roads. On the '14 it doesn't seem to matter that much.

Since we're having this conversation, how about smooth downshifting when you aren't forced to due to traffic. For me 4th. To 3rd. At 40. 3rd. To 2nd at 20. And 2nd. To 1st. At 5. These downshifts for me will let the tranny, "snick" into gear smoothly. When up shifting, 1st, 2nd. And 3rd., I wait a couple of seconds after I pull in the clutch and I get a smooth shift. My up shifts are, 1st. To 2nd. At 15, 2nd. To 3rd. At 35, 3rd. To 4th at 50. 50 is a toss up range for me for either 3rd. Or 4th depending on conditions. My engine doesn't like 4th. Below 45.

Thanks, that answers my question. The 2014 motor HP/torque peak "claim" by Ural is 5500 max HP and 4300 for max torque, so 4600 would be a relative "sweet" spot.

My local riding is not flat and the motor is happier pulling hills in third. Given a flat and more open road, then yeah, I'd shift at just over 50mph to fourth. While the motor doesn't sound too wound up, it is getting up there. Just needed an idea of what the RPMs were at that speed/gear.
