2007 was a good year - lots of mechanical reliability improvements.

Cleaning/w@$#ing the tank, cleaning brand new carbs, rejecting to 42 and 130 from 38 and 125. Will be repacking those wheel bearings, replacing new rubber parts, hoses, gas lines, installing a quick crossover disconnect, carb hoses, many things. Will need a new battery, probably Yuasa again. Good project.

To Kote or not to Kote? That's the question!
Any advice is appreciated.

Sounds like a good project. You should start your own thread about it.

Yes, it begins on page 1 of this thread. This thread is entirely devoted to my 1999 Tourist overhaul (with a little detour covering my 2001 Patrol "refreshing").

:) I guess I should share, but this thread is 98% my journey of discovery, lovingly handcrafted to document my trials and tribulations (and to infotain). I can't help but be a little possessive. :D

Chad,
You might want to put a piece of tubing over those coupling nuts. As you have it now, all of the rocking stress is on the threads. You need a wider base.
Of course it is your toy so I could be talking out of my hat.
You were right, Nick.

I never got around to cutting up and installing the tubing I purchased for this project and the handlebar riser finally fatigued and failed, just as you said it would.

It was a fun ride from my father-in-law's house back to my place, until I had to figure out why the Little Red Bear's steering had suddenly gone all cattywampus. It was controllable with only one loose handlebar riser attached, but only just barely so. Fortunately, I was only a few miles from his house and was able to cautiously ride back, where the bike remains parked.

Unfortunately, I was riding there to pick up the torque wrench I lent him, since I needed it to install my truck's new tie rods, which delayed my truck repair and prevented me from using the truck to pick up the bike, because it was out-of-commission until I could use the torque wrench!
Almost like a "Catch-22"!

A perfect storm of minor inconveniences and misfortune, precipitated by my lack of heeding your advice in a timely manner.

Glad you made it home. That first moment you felt it go must have been a "pucker" moment.

Glad you made it back and that it was a "soft" failure. I am right so seldom, I need to celebrate.

It was a progressive thing - first, I wondered why my mirrors were pointed down too low. Then, I realized it was the handlebar that was drooping. When I gave the handlebar a tug, the right side came up higher than the left. This is the point that I realized what the the problem was. While all of this was going on, the left handlebar riser was becoming progressively more loose. If I didn't have the fairing attached, I would have had less control than I did. For the "limp home" trip back to my father-in-law's, I kept the speed around 30mph. Steering felt like using a tiller on a boat. Fortunately, I encountered no other vehicles on the road and there were no sharp curves. I'm gonna go pick up the bike tomorrow, after I get a shop to perform an alignment on my truck. I thought about attempting to align the truck's front end and set toe-in at home, but I'll save that self-taught lesson for a future date.
