50th Anniversary Woodstock is happening!

Post by Waffl6 » Sat Jan 12, 2019 1:22 am

Hey all,

I know some of you folks probably went to some of the Woodstock festivals back in the day, and since nobody here has mentioned this yet I thought I would in case anybody was interested.

Here's a link to a Forbes article about it: http://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonbisno ... his-summer

No word on the band lineup that I can find, but rumor has it that it's going to be pretty big (3 stages) and some older performers are going to return.

August 16th-18th in Watkins Glen, New York.
Probably the youngest guy in the room.

I was a little too young (6yrs old) for 1969 Woodstock. Never knew it wasn't supposed to be a free concert :)

I totally missed the first one. I was enjoying an all expense paid vacation in sunny Southeast Asia at that time. :)

I was there with my best friend. We drove my 1964 austin healy sprite and got a parking space behind the stage area on one of the access roads. It is a "blur" now but I had a great time. I got high for the first time on some hashish that we scored from some folks who broke down on the highway (no pun). The funny thing was we ran into them 2 days later at the festival and scored again! Ahhh, the good old days.

As soon as I heard about this I went online and tried to book a hotel, no luck all sold out, unless you can afford 2.5k+ for a night or two. I am sure the travel companies swooped in and bought large blocks of rooms to "package deal" to want to be hippies. If I could afford it I would go back on my ride with my friend. Hey dear, roll me a couple fatties I want to reminisce.

I was 13 and got to hear my parents comments about the “filthy hippies” and their awful music.

Watkins Glen is a nice little burgh. I spent the day there during my Finger Lakes moto-camping tour in 2016. Come mid-August, the Harbor Hotel, on the southern end of Seneca Lake, may as well just add a zero to their daily room rate. They'll get it.

As for Woodstock v1.0, Lofty wasn't yet Lofty, so I know about that event only from encyclopedia entries.

I was actually under the impression that there was going to be on-site camping space. Is that not going to be the case? If not I am very sad. :(

Edit: I did find a quote from the dude who organized this and others:
Tickets? Mr. Lang and his team are still working on that. But they envision selling a maximum of around 100,000 three-day passes, with most attendees camping on site.

And that is appreciated! Thank-you.

I was 13 and not allowed to go. Never going to see anything like that again.

Going to and then reading about the making of the movie and the "rights" battles over the years is pretty interesting.

The 2 newer ones were utter disasters and mismanaged revenue-making machines.

I am concerned with this as well unfortunately. I am aware of what happened in 1999 with the fires, riots, and water crisis among other things.

They are trying to assure people that this, "won't be like that," but I suppose you can't really know for sure.

I was only 5, but my brothers were 15 and 16, I remember similar comments about why they couldn't go.

There is a great museum and concert venue on the site of the original concert dedicated to the history of the event.

It's not the same "spirit". There were virtually any police presence, they were all dealing with the traffic jam from Hell.
Self managed with the stars aligned maybe in perfect formation for that to happen. You think these are crazy days, growing up in those times...

Probably never happen again. Not too long after (still 1969) the Altomont Concert happened in CA.
The spirit was gone and even it's companion movie featured someone getting stabbed on tape plus 3 more hit & run deaths. Perhaps a precursor to todays reality videos.

The real Woodstock was a once in a lifetime event. I wish I had been old enough to go. Many other concerts I was at after that one but...

I was stationed at lakehurst, NJ when it happened. No one on the base knew anything like that was planned so virtually no one I knew ended up going at the time. We were all watching in the day room area of the barracks when it was filmed there. Grace Slick and all of the Jefferson Airplane made several unannounced visits to the local tv stations in the area afterwards and they were not recorded for the most part for those interviews. It was great seeing them at those local tv stations like that and answering a lot of questions you generally would not hear. Most of the woodstock event was shown locally as it happened. It was a major historical event as it transpired, but no way in the world would I have wanted to have been stuck in all that mud and such for a couple of days and fighting just to find a restroom or water. Virtually all the bands were shown playing on the local tv channels as the event happened. I can't remember any of them editing the film, so there was lots of nudity and a lot of smoking that funny weed shown. I loved the Jefferson Airplane, but my best liking was for Janis Joplin and Big Brother and The Holding Company. Brings back nice memories of at least being somewhat close at the time though.

I did that camping thing there the last time, along with about four hundred thousand others. I think I will pass on the camping, those days are past.
