Re: Final Drive issue

General rule of thumb is change the FD oil when you change the engine oil.

Re: cT Sidecar Shock Removal

When I was testing the Ikons, it never occurred to me that the stop bumper would come off. I did not see a fastener head underneath and assumed it was bonded to the bracket. Removing that bumper would have made it a bit easier. I compressed the shock with a ratchet strap. Wrapped the shock with card...

Re: Holopaw Ural

What makes me chuckle is that rig has been up there how long and yet it has not rusted away. And that is Flahridah where the air is more salt than O2. Yet Urals about 5 or so years ago started rusting a few days after they left the showroom. Gotta believe that Ural in front of the factory gets a fre...

Re: Need some help, lost power

Yup. When modern fuels evaporate they leave behind rock hard deposits that can plug jets and fuel passages. My guess is it ran fine until some of that stuff came loose and plugged up every passage it passed thru. Alex gave you your marching orders for when you get it back home. Please report back wi...

Re: A big thank you!!

Looking at that Coates machine, it is really a very upscale manual machine. The Horror Fright machine can be made to work very well with some mods. You need to make 3 nylon or similar material blocks for the rim clamp. Once that is done you're good to go. You already have the No-Mar. You don't even ...

Re: Hemingway in Sidecar

Later in WWII, he commandeered a German sidecar rig to get him closer to the action and was blown off the rig by an artillery round.

Re: What did you do to your Ural today?

Took LokiBoy’s advice from when we were doing the 20k service... used a white paint pen to paint the TDC marker so it will be easier to identify during the next service. If you're really patient, you could probably duplicate my Amazing Technicolor Dream Flywheels through the crankcase timing window...

Re: What did you do to your Ural today?

Like in a Honda 305 Scrambler?
Yup. I crossed 2nd and 3rd gearsets to give me better ratios across the 4 speeds. Old trick they would do back when these were new.

I just realized that my post should have gone in the ON thread instead of this, the TO thread. D'oh!

Re: What did you do to your Ural today?

Took the Ural for the first ride of the season. Been riding my 305 Scrambler after changing the gear ratios in the tranny. After riding that little 305, the Ural felt like a Hayabusa.

Re: 20' GU final drive blowing oil from breather plug

Center wear is typical on a bike tire given the profile. And I'm sure you know that. But for us, I would try dropping the pressure a bit to even out the wear. Keep in mind that given your description of your riding habits, that pusher is doing a lot more work than I would suspect the average Ural pu...

Re: No wiggle on push rods, head install

I don't think the Ural is an intefearance fit engine so you could have wrong valve opening and not hit the piston. If that is the case, then the cam would have to be way off. With lash checked at TDC with the other valve closed, you might still be somewhere on that valve's lobe. You definitely have...

Re: Horn replacement?

Not sure where you mounted it, but if I had to mount one, I'd put it between the hack and the tub somewhere on the hack frame.

Re: No wiggle on push rods, head install

Question. Are the rocker mounts, arm etc the same for intake and exhaust? I see they are left and right casting, but could I have them on the wrong valve? It's been too long since I had mine apart to remember details. And when I pull an engine apart, I put parts in bags and label them. I would neve...

Re: No wiggle on push rods, head install

I would not expect lapping to remove enough material that you could even measure it. And since you ran out of adjustment on the rocker adjuster, I'm doubtful it is a gasket thing. I cannot envision that amount of difference in thickness between different cylinder base gaskets, and head gaskets. I've...
