No one uses wraps of duct tape as a rim strip anymore? No I never use duct tape... gorilla tape is tougher . Yes it is. And it's a motherf r to get off when the time comes. Which is why I use half a roll of insulation tape over the rim tape. It is much easier to cut off when needed and costs pence ...

But my question is a) with minimal mechanical experience other than routine stuff, is it a job I can do myself if I have to? British guys, they do a load for charity at bike events, from weekend rallies all the way through to the TT. The Purple Helmets display team. They get up to some proper nonsense.

I've made a couple of cereal box gaskets in my time - the last one was the sump gasket on a Ural 650, I rubbed a little grease into it to give it a bit of repellence and thought it would last a week or two. I sold it about a year later, still fitted and still oil tight.
