Re: The big trip

Hello Yvonne and Fran! It's been long while since we spoke. It's great to see you guys have now gotten to South America, we enjoyed the Stahlratte as well. Sorry to hear of the clutch troubles, ours made it until Chile - I changed it on a picnic table at the beach on Christmas day. Have fun in Colom...

Re: Import europe to usa

My day job is for Porsche and we have a Euro delivery program. It is a long drawn out process and rarely goes off without a hitch. Insurance, Customs, Duties, shipping, delivery process at both ends, PDI (pre-delivery inspection) all have processes and paperwork which changes regularly. Coming back ...

Re: Planning a trip to the tip of South America

Chile charges a 'reciprocity fee' for North Americans arriving by air.

If you cross by overland they do not charge the $100 fee.

Re: Planning a trip to the tip of South America

A carnet is a 'guarantee' that you will leave the country with your vehicle, it is basically a document that guarantees the value of import duties and taxes for countries you may visit without having to pay all of the taxes etc on your vehicle/equipment. Each country has its own insurance requiremen...

Hello All; Wegunter - That was us. More than happy to provide advice. Just ask away. If you prefer, you can always email me and we can have a conversation. We have another couple from here heading out in June for Argentina on their Ural as well. As Sven said the most hassle was border crossings. Not...

Re: URALS ON BAIKAL

They have been bugging us to go to Russia and do that trip...... we live in Canada and have an Ural, so the thrill of going halfway around the world to drive around in the cold di not really appeal to us. We did their 'Rickshaw Run' trip in India last year. Organization? there isn't any. See the key...

Re: Need a good substitute for 27mm pin wrench

I just stuck two allen keys from the tool roll in the holes when the pins fell out and used that - didn't have to buy anything or reinvent, does that make it a 'What would Ivan do' repair?

Re: A Grand Adventure Needs a Trusty Steed

While I was typing a couple of other posts chimed in. Stevesdniper - We were always on the lookout for any Ural parts along the way, never found ANY - never saw another Ural, could not buy a spare tire even until the UK, while they may be prolific in certain countries and areas - Central and South A...

Re: A Grand Adventure Needs a Trusty Steed

We started at our home in Canada and after Argentina sailed to Africa and continued riding to Scotland before we turned around. 30ish countries and 38,000km We spent a lot of time in the backcountry and 2000km off road in...

Re: Round the World ride - what spares/tools would you take?

We did an extended tour through over thirty countries from Canada to Argentina and then North from Senegal to Scotland. The most important factor to us was knowing that we would have no dealer support from the Mexico border until Europe. We took spares/tools that we felt could be changed easily and ...

Hello Jon, I'm off racing in Spokane this weekend, I'll be in touch when I return. Your trip sounds good so far. We got close to Ushuaia last time - just decided the boat was going to be more fun. Always happy to head of somewhere new! Speaking of around the world.......we are only missing about 100...
