quick change air filter

Postby windmill » Fri May 08, 2009 5:01 pm

I replaced the air box lid bolts with spring loaded latches from Mcmaster-Carr, and removed the dome. Now I can do a filter swap in about a minute.

I didn't know those old steel wheel rigs in the pic even came with a filter box to begin with. :-)

Me, I'd be tempted to try the turn-to-open, non-locking draw down latch shown at the site. Either looks as if they would work well, but I just sort of like the smaller latch set up that can be removed with a flat-blade screwdriver. Sort of like a dzus fastener in a way. I'd have to look to see where exactly to mount them for ease of access on my air box though, but seems like an easy enough mod to make and I am tempted to do so at some point. I don't care for tape on the top, so I'd likely just put in some small screws with rubber washers at that area, just so rain never becomes a real problem with the lid.

Thanks for posting the mod idea.

I don't think the draw-string, spring-loaded ones are, but the turn-to-open style that uses a flat-blade screwdriver to open does come in a black. I think I'd look at using pop rivits to secure to the air box on any of them.

Question:

Just wondering a bit, but the top oval, or tower, was removed with this modification. I am thinking that the tower actually serves a purpose in redirecting rain water or spashed water from the air box. If I am correct, then removal would give the top of the box a flat surface that could be a problem when the bike is exposed to a lot of water. Any thoughts on that or is it a "not to worry over" type of problem?

I don't see how there is a need to remove the tower in the first place, but maybe it gives more room with the new latch devices or such. I haven't tried this mod yet and someone on the motherboard says a couple of screws will work as well as the modified latches. Me, I sort of like the latch idea better, but await the posted pics from the other person.

On the improved air box with the bottom air intake, the dome is purely decorative, serving absolutely no function, and has been remove from production. That little dome was about as effective as using a tea spoon as an umbrella. Removing the dome makes it easier to remove and replace cover. I have made a lot of modifications for a lot of reasons, but from a practical standpoint, it is the best thing have done. I was using thumb screws with a large plastic T handle, the latches are much, much better

I used the spring latches because they are the smallest ones. Check the CAD drawings, they have dimensions, most of the other latches are way to big. The curved side of the air box really limits choices. I thought about rivets, but went with stainless M4 screws, and lock nuts. I got plugs for the holes on top, but grabbed the wrong size.
