Noobie 2016 cT oil questions.

Postby 1chapelcredit » Tue May 23, 2017 5:49 pm

Ok, submitting this here for people to ignore or ridicule.

Getting ready to do my first oil change (MY first, it's been changed by it's previous owner) including engine, transmission, final drive, and a new oil filter. Just to help you ridicule me best, you ought to know I'm super intimidated by this. I've got all the tools, just haven't bought the oil yet.

So... my questions: What oil do you recommend for each, is it any different for the newer EFI models, what oil filter do you recommend and is there one I can buy at the local Pep Boys or on Amazon?

Thanks for your help!

wow! the can of worms is open again! Just kidding its a old joke, here on the forum. At least your in the right department for oil questions. Okay enough, i to am a new Ural owner 2016 gear up. and i have done the oil changes also. Please don't be scared its very easy and as long as you put the proper amount of oil in, and tighten up the drain plug your good to go. Now here is where the eyebrows go up, what kind of oil is best. I wouldn't really listen to anyone on this subject, as it will get crazy just use the manual recommendations for quantity and quality and weight. Its hard to go wrong with this info and as you research the forum and web sites you might change your mind later as for now i suggest use the factory recommendations. Now all that said im a redline oil all around guy ,and i don't really know why just research! p.s many after market filters available i got mine on eBay $8.00 a quality German filter , Mann # 75/3 ,that is exactly the same as the Ural type.

Just get oil at an autoparts store. There is no oil made that is worth having it shipped in from god knows where. The tiny difference between the lubricity of different brands of oil is negligible.

I don't know what the Ural factory recommends for oil specifications, but just get any brand of that.

Engine: 20W-50, or 20W-60, fully synth.
Gearbox: 75W-90, fully synth. Thicker makes cog swapping a bit smoother.
Final drive: 85W-140 gear & rear axle oil. Again thicker discourages it leaking out past the input shaft seal*. For the same reason, only fill to 20cc less** than what the book says (capacities are different depending whether 1wd or 2wd). E.g. 1wd, 90cc; 2wd, 110cc (I think).

( * Factory's level [i.e. dipstick marks] is higher than the shaft seal lip, which is completely daft, I can't think of anything else I've seen where the oil level is higher than the oil seals. )

( ** is what my dealer does. )

Filter: Mann + Hammel W735 or W7003 (different numbers for the same thing). Bigger diameter than other makes so fit better as per Ural's item and not too long.

You guys are awesome, thanks so much! In another thread somebody mentioned spinning the wheel when you change the final drive oil... I have no idea what that means.

Yeah, I tried that too and didn't really notice any additional oil coming out of the drain. basically it means when you drain the oil, you spin your rear wheel manually to move the gears and thus maybe eject some additional oil caught up in there. The best advice I can give as a new 2016 owner too, is just to keep it simple.

not sure if it's still in the manual but this is what "spinning the wheel" probably referred to:

Actually spin the rear wheel several times with 20w50 engine oil to flush out any crud. I did and didn't notice anything. my opinion is really not worth the trouble, but very important is check engine oil level with dip stick setting on top of threads not screwed in. and trans to bottom of threads, the final drive on the other hand is checked with the dip stick screwed all the way in. don't ask its a Ural thing!

I've mentioned before, the attachment states "fill the casing with 20-50" then spin the wheel. I would take that to fill to the top of the fill plug, flushing out places that never get much oil.

+1
Also it helps to let it drain overnight to get the last bit of oil out. Then when you fill it with the correct amount from the manual, you won't overfill it and have misting out the breather.

Try changing containers in a few minutes after the oil has stopped dripping. Leave it over night and see if any more oil comes out.

Is that the angled fill plug in the side? (Picture not clear) Later models have the fill plug at the top of the casing, with a dip stick.

Personally I think it's all too much of a faff, never did anything like this with my other shaft drive bikes. Drain, plug back in (+new washer), measured amount of new poured in, filler plug back in, job done.

Will have to ask my dealer what he does!

Many of us run gear oil in the transmission, especially the high end synthetics. I've had good luck with Mobil One 20-50 V twin oil, others run Red Line heavy shock. I've had other bikes and cars that ran motor oil in the trans, it's not unheard of.
