Which Red Line in tranny?

Which Red Line in tranny?

is there a consensus among those who use Redline oils which variety works best in the Ural transmission? I have a quart of Heavy Shockproof I'm thinking of using next instead of the Mobil 1 V-twin 20-50, which works great. Just wondering if the Redline would work better. Their website lists a V-Twin transmission oil that sounds custom made for Urals "This product dampens transmission noise (reducing the notorious shifting clunk found in these gearboxes)" then later "Same fluid as our unique Heavy ShockProof® Gear Oil" I had some jumping out of gear issues with Castrol 20-50 and 90wt gear oil that the Mobil V-twin 20-50 greatly reduced. I almost hate to try something else but am curious about the Redline.
past afflictions include TR motocars and bikes, R60/2 & a R65, MGs, and a Citroen.
Now a 2012 FF GU and an 87 K75s
dual K&N cones on PVC intake, 40/137.5
Raceway needles
Modtop exhaust
$29 VW Hydraulic steering dampener

I use Redline in both my bikes. Go with the straight HD Shockproof. I believe the V-Twin oil is for wet clutches.

The jumping out is not related to the oil. You might need to adjust your neutral.

So far so good, no leaks, no fuzz on the drain plugs.

Joe I used both the HD Redline and the lightweight Redline. Like the HD better. I now us Moble 15-50 synthetic with good results.

HD Shock in both GB and FD.

You will notice a definite change in shifting on the GB after about 1K km.

No need to change it every sunrise once you have broken in the gears (~ 10K km)

Changed mine out at that to check the swarf, NONE.

This is NOT about saving a few $$$, but superior lubrication and protection.

This is what I use too, and no problems with it.

They also make several manual transmission oils for cars, and the Vtwin trans oil that is similar to the HD shock. Wondering what the advantages of the HD or Lightweight are.

What kind of sawdust? Pine, Oak, Ash? (got lots of ash thanks to the emerald ash borer) We need to know!!!

that is one of the first tricks you learn when you can't afford to fix that screaming GB or rear axle.

actually, I put sawdust in my first car when it was really making noise, never had a problem with it from there on out.

simple things sometimes work better.

This is what I use too, and no problems with it.


I used these lubricants also, but I switched them around with the lightweight in the final drive and the heavy duty in the transmission. I imagine anyone of them could be used in both units. Has anyone given any guidance on their use?

Which is better in the transmission: heavy duty or lightweight? It seems like a lighter weight would make sense, since the gearbox runs cooler, and the factory recommendation is for 20w50 motor oil. But most on this list seem to go with the heavy duty....

Also, if you look at Redline's website, it looks like HD Shockproof is for differentials and LW Shockproof is for manual transmissions. So, again, doesn't lightweight shockproof make more sense for the tranny?

On the other hand redline vtwin trans fluid is the same fluid as heavy duty shockproof, not lightweight shockproof.
