Blackstone Laboratory

Postby rebelrider » Sat Jun 18, 2016 9:09 am

For the sake of curiosity, I sent a sample of oil to Blackstone for analysis. I thought I'd share the results.
Image
This is the first oil change I've done at the full 5,000km interval. Nice to know the engine is happy with what I'm doing.

Anyone else get one done lately?

Edit: Non-synthetic Napa/Valvoline oil was used for this interval.

Rebelrider,

Thanks for sharing your data. I'm curious what oil you were/are using.

Thanks and best,

Hi Jeff,
I don't know what the brand of oil was. Whatever the dealer used. I'm sure its nothing fancy. I'm currently running with GTX 20W-50. No additives.

This report can be a baseline to judge other oils. I would ask dealer for brand. You can try other brand's and see if percentages change.

Hey Jeff and Rob,
I asked, and my dealer uses Napa/Valvoline dino oil for all the Urals they service. So the lab report reflects that oils' performance.

The next report will be for the GTX oil I used. Now, I put a lot of thought into what kind of oil to use on my rig, and of all the choices out there that I considered, GTX... was the one on the shelf at the auto parts store at the time.

Good job and things look great. From the title I was however expecting some new breakthrough from the Umbrella Corporation or something. :foilhead:

I figured it would be easier to search for later if I left the subject simple.

Also, I'd be interested to see others' results if anyone does them and wants to share here.

Very interesting report
.
I have always used oils that have high concentrations of ZDDP (Zinc, Phosphorus, Magnesium, ect.)
For example I use Brad Penn 20/50 oil with high concentrations of ZDDP.

If the analysis is correct, Napa/ Vavoline shows high concentrations even after 5000 kms!

It will be interesting to see your results with Valvoline GTX. Word has it that they cut back the ZDDP additives because of damage to cat. converters.

Interesting, but the jury is still out for me.

And the oil beat goes on!

^^^this! Feds required motor oil manufacturers to cut back on ZDDP from oils we now get.
Recently I poured 2oz of ZDDP additive at my last oil change & it seems to quiet down the valve train. ZDDP in oil is good for flat tappet motors like we had during "the good old days"...think street rods. Articles I read says it lubricates the cam lobes as they bang around the tappets. Seems to be working for me but at 2,000 kms, it's too early to tell. I like the way my motor sounds now, though. :D

I did an oil sample last year after my winter run of Rotella 5-40 . I need to dig out the paper and figure out how to post it . All know is that the oil was trashed !! I want to say I had 1200 miles on it (miles not km) and it was down to 20 wt equivalent and super fuel saturated along with very high metals . Seems I need to change it at 600 miles in winter . Then again it is Wyoming and I ride all winter but not long distances . I will search for my report .

That's why you do oil analysis. It gives you a heads up before things go all pear shaped.
I'd be concerned and investigate.

Castrol GTX is no longer recommended for motorcycles by Castrol. I spoke directly to them 2 weeks ago about this.
