Car oil vs motorcycle oil?

Camo, I use cheap 20w 50 mineral oil in Speedboat & Penrite 15w 60 fully synthetic in Squib. Speedboat is now a fairly high mileage bike, and has been using cheap mineral oil since new. Squib has used the Penrite oil since its first service. Urals have roller bearings on the crankshaft and a low pressure oil pump.
Both work well, and both are used by many Ural owners.
The only oil I'm not prepared to use is 4T motorcycle oil because our bikes have dry clutches, and normal automotive oil is specified in the owners Manual. But many owners use it without any issue.

I am not going to go out and look it up but I am pretty sure the Manual that came with my Rig recommends Castrol 20W 50 GTX.

I vote for truck oil....HD diesel oil to be exact. And with Ural's recommended change interval of 1550 miles.....I sure won't be urinating my money away on synthetics.

Yep, Castrol 20W 50 GTX is what Ivan recommends.

When I can find it around these parts I have always used 20W-50 diesel oil in my Ural. It has a better additive package then the newer car oil do. More zinc for one.
We may not have it all together,
But, together we have it all.

Use SH rated motorcycle oil only, do not use the newer car oils as they do not contain enough of the wear additives that an AIR-COOLED engine needs. Heavy doses of magnesium and moly are needed to protect hot running air cooled engines and oils meant for water cooled cars have a completely different makeup. Oil is not just oil anymore, they are formulated exactly for their intended uses. :foilhead:

It's a Ural not the space shuttle. Don't over think this. By all means "put oil in the motor".

Very true, Joe. At the old 2,500km interval, dish soap would probably worked in a pinch. Ha!

That said, synthetic feels better to me given the heat and the amount of oil smoke that comes out my breather. Since the bike went out of warranty, I've upped the interval to a more reasonable 5,000km.

I was looking for a cheap oil for a short run in my other bike. I was shocked to see how much dyno oil was. Store brands are even getting up there. Synthetic is hardly a premium, about $1/qt more. Not a big deal when you consider what even the cheapest oil is at a motorcycle shop.

Gone are the days of my youth and $1 quarts of good stuff.

As I said originally, I like the additive content of diesel oils for our flat tappets.

Have a good one.

When the ural engines came out back in the 40's, was motorcycle oil offered?

(It's a rhetorical question)

Yes.

But you had to press several motorcycles to get a quart.

I use of 20/50 Castrol 4T motorcycle oil in my engine.

Plenty of ZDDP and zinc lube additives, required for these old design engines.

And the beat goes on..............................

I use car oil all the time. I prefer car oil for high load turbocharged engines as it's better for high local temperatures of air cooled engine. Motorcycle oil is designed to work with wet clutch and gearbox, not a case for Ural. After all, Ural is low stress low power simple engine designed to work with Russian oil - tapped right off the oil well pipe with barely any additives.
By my deeds I honor him, flat twin.
