Final Drive Issues- Chapter 2

Postby Niteblues » Sat Feb 27, 2016 5:40 pm

Yesterday I went for a short ride and just as I was leaving home, it felt like it had a flat or something...kind of a thump-thump-thump feeling coming from the final drive or something. I went around the block and it went away so I continued on my way but cut the ride short and went home after breakfast. Today I changed the final drive oil since I was suspicious and lo and behold I found a bunch of metal pieces. Fine pieces, but I could feel them as I rubbed my fingers together. :(

Nuts.

I figure I'll take the final drive out and then find someone to fix it for me. I'm not comfortable with my mechanical abilities to get it back together correctly.

Here's the link to Chapter 1:

That first time I also had indications of an issue but I did not heed them and the result was massive destruction of the final drive and a flatbed ride home.

I took the final drive out today. The picture shows the hole in the swingarm that the driveshaft goes through. Most swingarms have an oval which allows for removing the final drive without having to remove the swingarm too. I needed to remove the shocks and the mudflap and the swingarm bolts so I could get the final drive studs out of the swingarm. When I remove all of those things it still takes a little bit of wiggling and pulling and twisting and then everything falls apart as it should.

Skip any step and it's a PITA and it just don't quite come apart.

Scott, you have to drop the swing arm on an 04??????? On my 06 the final drive slides right out.

Looks like he has a newer final drive with the newer driveshaft....the one where the splined end is on the rear and not the front.

Scott- I have an 04 with the new style shaft, too. I was able to get it out by just freeing the swing arm without removing it from the shocks. May be different on the 2WD, though.

Ship it to Van - I'm sure he'll do it!

The issue is with the hole in the swing arm. It is not elongated like 99% of all Urals. I cannot move the final drive over far enough to have the final drive stud bolts clear the swingarm.
I think if you look at your swing arm where the driveshaft goes through it you will see that yours is an oval which allows scooching the final drive over enough for the fd studs to clear. Mine does not scooch over very much [at all].

Plus the 1WD only has two studs to fit in rather than four. Got it!

Scott.
what do u think you broke in fd?
ring gear.
I normal remove the 2 bolts that hold side shaft yoke, before removing fd this will help with fd studs clearance

Van- I really don't know what the issue is with the FD. It had a weird clump-clump-clump sound while riding it, then it went away, but when I checked the FD oil it had metal pieces in it. Bolt backed out? I don't know, we'll have to see when you get it and open it up.

I'm not sure what you mean by the "2 bolts that hold side shaft yoke". Those get unbolted early on in the process of removing the FD.
