Factory broken switch now broken.

Postby Darkblood » Wed Apr 18, 2012 4:31 pm

O.K. Today takes the cake. While driving home from my under the table job I passed a nice State Trooper who instantly spun around and hit the blue lights.

I pulled over and shut the rig off to figure out what I was doing wrong as at that point in time I was actually under the speed limit.
Well he was nice enough to let me know my headlights weren't on. Neither were my running lights but my brake lights worked fine.
I fumbled around with a couple things on the side of the road with him waiting when I asked if I could turn the spot light on and get it home where I could really tear it apart. He let me do that and saw that my blinkers were working and brake lights were working and since I only had 6 miles to go he let me go with the "Get it fixed" verbal warning.

Well after checking damn near everything, grounds, ignition switch, the rats nest...etc. I pulled the right side grip apart and as I did so the lights came on, then went off, then came on......etc.

Well what I found is the little European switch that Ural is nice enough to break and lock into the "On" position had been vibrated enough that it wasn't making good contact causing it to not allow power to get to the lights.

2 hours of fiddling with it including opening the gap on that side to use a screwdriver to fiddle with it ended up in me using a piece of plastic to add a bit of pressure to the switch so it would make contact. The problem is I don't think it will hold up to bumpy travel so my options are contact the dealer to try to get a replacement broken switch (That just doesn't sound right), wire it directly (seems like a waste), or find a European switch to replace it.

So if any of the members in Europe know of a friendly dealer.....

Will do. Any idea of what part I'd be looking for. Tried getting any infor on the one that was in the grip but couldn't get anything useful off it.
And yes I tried a search on here for about an hour and couldn't find the post I remember seeing that had a part number associated with it.

I'd opt for jumpering it at the electrical connector for the right grip assy. Seems easy enough!

Just ordered the Domino part with the 3 way switch from Offroadchampions for $70.00 shipping included. Will take 2 to 3 weeks to get here as it's a special order. Well not only will I no longer have to worry about bumps shutting off my light but will be able to run stealth through the woods, and start the bike with the lights off all with a factory unit that in my opinion should have been left functioning but for the "Nanny State" rules that are there because us Americans are apparently too stupid to figure out how to turn a switch to the on position without the vehicle doing it automatically.

Thanks for the info Gflapg.

Now for the waiting.................................................

I think this will be the last "Safety" "Emission" "Nanny state" thing I had on the bike that has been replaced with function. No auto Petcock. Crank case removed from the airbox...Cats removed.....yadda yadda yadda...

Mine came with the switch in the grip but it looks like they hit it with a hatchet to make it comply with US regulations. After taking the grip apart to find the problem I'm frankly surprised it lasted this long.

love it on my '76 Beemer...even the 88 HD I can turn off the light (had 3 position switch with both ones joined by a single wire that some how got removed). Ridiculous law.

It is very nice to have, but don't forget to turn it on - if the trooper sees you unlit you will have to lie convincingly about how you have a switch.

Just walk to the front of the bike use left hand to turn switch on as you pound on the headlight with your right hand. Smile and tell the officer you will get a new headlight as soon as you get home as this one must have a bad filament.
