HELP my GOBI IS STUCK!

Postby commiezilla » Sat Feb 25, 2012 1:59 am

I was bombing around in 2wd and now I cant get out. I followed instructions for how to engage the 2wd and I was doing fine until I wanted to to go in reverse and now I cant get out of 2 wheel and I had to be towed back home.

I can get the bike into neutral but the light does not come on, I can move the 2wd shifter but it does not disengage the drive shaft. I am not sure that reverse works at this point. It kinda feels like the bike is in limbo with the gear shift.

Its brand new got it yesterday and I already broke it. I will be taking it back to the dealer tomorrow, any other ideas?

If it's that new, it's something I'd leave firmly with the dealer to look at!

It's only a teething issue, don't worry :)

Put it up on the center stand and jack up the sidecar wheel, spin the wheels by hand listening and feeling for anything out of sorts both in and out of gear. Rotate the rear wheel by hand and attempt to put it in and out of 2wd. Verify clutch is adjusted properly it will cause problems with shifting if it is too tight or loose. Make sure the brakes are not dragging

If it all seems ok, try everything with it running at idle. check if it will shift through the gears, and go in reverse. They can be very stiff when new, sometimes it is just a matter of breaking it in some and getting a feel for it.

There is a possibility the shift quadrant stops are not adjusted properly, or one of a few issues that sometimes pop up on a new rig, but those are things your dealer should handle with a new rig.

By "following the instructions" for getting into 2wd...what do you mean? What exactly did you do to get in/out of 2wd?

I was not on pavement when the 2wd was engaged. And I was in neutral.

The first couple of times I did mine when it was new, it took some work to get the technique figured out, but I would think if you messed with it long enough to give up then it isn't just new parts settling in. Kind of strange, since it is a fairly simple design.

Give the technique in this link a try, I have never had an issue when shifting as Mr. Cobb recommends...

I did what windmill suggested and its not in 2wd at all so it was doing fine. However when i try to go forward I get a clunking from the gear box, the bike will go forward but its seems like its not fully engaging the drive shaft or cogs. Does anyone have a picture of what their drive shaft linkage should look like?

I wonder if you have fallen victim of the hockey puck from hell syndrome. Seems like a bunch of the newer rigs have chewed the rubber coupler up. The picture below gives a good view of it in the center just keep in mind that a bunch of crap has been removed from the area including the clutch actuator rod. Check the rubber coupler between the output shaft and the drive shaft to see if it's been chewed up causing the output shaft to spin and clunk into the drive shaft but not turn the drive shaft. The fix for that is to get the older rubber style coupler like Gobium just had up for sale. Either that or you got the gear box stuck in a false neutral between 2nd and 3rd or 3rd and 4th. If the donut is good try rocking it back and forth and try to downshift or upshift the heal toe lever to see if it will fully engage into a gear.

After I had it towed, we looked at it again, the drive shaft at the gear box clunks and seems to be (for a lack of better terms) skipping or a pop as it makes a full rotation.

@Navy Chief:: I did, they said they would look at it and try to determine what was wrong. I don't know if I caused it or if I made it worse when I was trying to troubleshoot it.

I doubt you did any damage troubleshooting the problem, it sounds like something was not quite right in the gearbox from the factory.

I have heard of a couple of similar problems over the years, with 2wd. It is nothing you did, just the very rare incidence of damage within. The very few I have heard of were fixed easily under warranty.
