Sold - 1997 Ural Tourist with BMW R60/5 engine

Postby Cheeseyrider » Sat Jan 02, 2016 1:44 pm

I "sold" the rig to a neighbor in January. He gave me $500 down with a commitment to pay the rest 'next paycheck". Long and ugly story short - He never paid the remainder and he tried to sue me for breach of contract saying I sold him the rig for $500 and never gave him the title. I'm REALLY glad I held onto the title until final payment. Also learned a lesson that a 'neighbor' isn't the same as a 'friend"...

Anyway, the rig is for sale again. Asking $3,000.

Doc tells me I have a compression fracture on my L2 vertebrae so no riding for at least 6 months. Candidly, not sure I'll be able to ride the Ural at all - it isn't the softest ride in town. So, I'm putting it up for sale. It's been my daily rider since I bought it earlier this year. The only problem I had was the front drum brake link broke, requiring me to replace the front drum brake cover and link assembly. Other than that, it's been quite dependable.

I sold the bench seat because it came with a solo seat, but didn't like the way it looked so I bought a Harley Police Seat and made my own mounts. It's wide and comfortable, but will also include the other solo seat (can be seen in some of the pictures). I added a stebel air horn and Denali driving lights on the sidecar to help with night riding - they really light up the road. They're LED's so they draw very little current.

Details as provided to me when I bought the bike:
First owner had Eckhard Shulz / Moto Retro in Canada do the BMW conversion at a cost of $3,000. I'm told Eckhard was the master at these conversions. In 2011, after 28,000Km the BMW R60 /5 lost compression and he sold it. The dealer that bought it had the engine rebuilt top and bottom end.
Second owner rode it for another 5000km and sold it to me in May of 2015. I have maintenance records from second owner as well as my records. I've put a little over 1,550km since purchasing the rig.

It's been my daily commuter vehicle for work and errands. The BMW R60 runs perfectly. It purrs running along at 45 - 55 mph. I've had it up to 65, but only a couple times and for short stints.

Tires are 2 years old with 2km and are in good shape - spare has never been used.

I live in Central Illinois (about 1/2 way between Chicago and St Louis). Due to my back issues, I don't think I drive very far for delivery, so would much prefer the buyer picks it up, but open to ideas.

Below are links to a video I made of riding around my neighborhood and pictures of the bike in winter gear (Windscreen and engine guards), and in summer without the windscreen/guards.

Runs really nice, I'd be all over it if I had the $$. A Bargain as well.

I sent you a couple of pms not sure if the last one went thru:

Thanks for the pics. I did find the link in your post, dummy me. I'm not sure what I want to do, your price is in my ball park. I did have a '96 for a while but sold it,mostly to keep the wife happy. I sold a velorex because it was to light for my DS bike. I think I have my Honda/Escort rig sold. So once I get the cash in hand I'll be a little more serious. I have a bit of soul searching to do....

Sent PM's to you as well Octane. Understand the soul searching - I've seriously considered draining all the fluids and putting the bike in storage until my back heals...

This is one Bural (for those who do not know, he also does conversions) tested out the last time it came up and was down south. It is what the man says it is. IF you don't like the R60, an Rwhatever will slide right in its place... Price is very reasonable, but alas, I already have one...good luck, some one buy this thing...

Yeah, someone jump in and buy it, don't let my post get in the way. I'm still on the fence whether to hack my dual sport bike or go the ural route.

I heard a rumor it will be heading to PA :)

I would have gone for it if either it were closer or I had really been in the market. It will be well appreciated and in good hands.
