TX & LA Primitive Campout/Ride to March 24-26 2017

Postby kentsilk » Mon Jan 16, 2017 3:38 pm

TURD's and Friends

Primitive Campout/Ride

Swampfox and I are planning a unique late winter ride and campout. This will be a 2 night event with the Friday night campout at Kisatchie Bayou Campgroup.

Kisatchie Bayou Campground: Visitors to the Kisatchie Bayou Recreation Complex can enjoy scenic views of the rocky bayou surrounded by beautiful old growth hardwood and pine which gives this out-of-the-way recreation area such a wonderful setting for visitors. Hiking, camping, picnicking, fishing, and just relaxing are all popular activities enjoyed here. Kisatchie Bayou Campground is a primitive walk-in camping atmosphere with 17 walk-in sites and 1 drive-in site at the middle parking area. Tent pads, barbeque pits, and lantern posts are at each campsite. Trash receptacles and restrooms are available, but visitors should be aware that there is *NO WATER AVAILABLE* at this campground. This complex is a designated fee area.

Ride:
Friday: Stage at Perry Thigpen’s county home at the end of C Moore Road northwest of Robeline – leave at 2 or 3 pm, travel to Kisatchie Bayou primitive campground and set up camp. We need to a couple hours travel time and arrive no later than 5pm to set up camp.

Saturday: Break camp, explore the area and return to Perry’s by 5pm to re-set camp.

Swampfox will lead the ride down Friday and guide us around on Saturday.

Will the roads be rough??? I'll never forget that ride in Timberon, NM, (rocks & pot holes) my brain was rattled & Lee's SC trunk lid decided to bail. I hope the road we'll be scooting around on is tame. I'm getting too old for these shenanigans. :P

Charlie there will be a little dirt about 6 miles in and out according to Lee. All Forest server roads that are basically maintained.

Charlie, there are six miles of NFS gravel roads on the final leg to the Kisatchie Bayou campground. Certainly not as ruff as the Timberon route as Louisiana does not have big rocks submerged in the road. Last time I traversed these roads they were OK 'cept for the occasional wash-board section; however, if it hasn't rained in a week it can get quite dusty.

Usually I find the big rocks  I'm gonna start tightening all the nuts & bolts I can get to. :P I can deal with the dust but them rocks...whoa. Well...I trust you guys like I did at Timberon...I guess a "rough road" is relative. :P  I'm ready though! "Bring 'em on"!

More details:

We will stage Friday at Perry's homestead at the end of C Moore Road northwest of Robeline and East of Marthaville. Directions to Perry's:
From La6 at Robeline, take La120 West twd Marthaville for 5 miles, turn left onto C Moore Road; or
From the Marthaville General Store, take La120 East 2.3 miles twd Robeline, turn right onto C Moore Road.

Once on C Moore Road, travel about 3/4 miles to what appears to be the end of the road, but you're not there yet; bear to to the right and cross the little bridge and travel another 1/4 mile thru the woods to Perry's homestead, where he'll likely have you go to the right around the large live oak tree to park your tow vehicles. Here is a pic of Mrs. SwampFox navigating Perry's driveway just past the little bridge - she sez a Ural would be a better steed for this route:
Image

Target arrival at Perry's by 2:30 pm, Friday, March 10, 2016, as we'll need to leave by 3:00 pm to ride the 40 miles to the Kisatchie Bayou campground so set up camp before dark. The general route from Perry's to the campground is linked in Kent's first Post above.

Should you be later, we can meet-up at the Kasatchie Forest HQ at the corner of La117 and the Longleaf Trail Scenic Byway here: https://www.google.com/maps/dir//Par+Rd ... 31.4897466
Or just meet us at the campground.

My friend John plans to prepare bean soup at the campground on Friday. We'll have a fire going so please bring you brats, boudin, sausage, etc for supper. Remember, this is a primitive campground with vault toilets and NO RUNNING WATER, so we'll need to be prepared.

Should you need last minute supplies, we will pass two convenience/gas stations to the way to the campground, and there is a Dollar General about a mile off-route in Robeline.

The Kistachie Bayou is unique to Louisiana, with its clear waters flowing over sandstone and around bright white sandbars. Here are some pics from when Oldtimer & I visited the campground:

Lot's of critters frequent the area, so Charlie will need to lock up his grub:

The campground area is on the hill behind where Oldtimer is standing:

After breaking camp on Saturday, March 11th, we'll explore the Kisatchie National Forest and visit the Grand Canyon of Louisiana 8) before returning to Perry's, where he plans to make arrangements for a simple catered meal for Saturday evening - cost $TBD. :hungry:

Hope you all don't mind a new comer. Bought a 2015 Patrol the weekend after thanksgiving. Have been down to Perry's at Easter a few times.

Oldtimer...when & what time will you be heading out? If you don't mind me tagging along, that way you'll have company when you get lost  Ya know if it ain't on the interstate, I kinda meander around sight seeing. :P
Lee...will there be time to pickup some cracklings & boudin? Getting crawfish might be pushing it a little.

We're sorta in the wrong area for cracklins & boudin. But good news: I visited with John yesterday and he's looking forward to cooking up his bean soup conglomeration for us on Friday evening. :pot: We'll certainly need to be prepared for coffee.
