It's a real cool place to visit.....if you're lucky enough to catch the place open.

I'd be willing to bet there will be a lot of folks along the path of it vying for position. Hopefully not too many that far east. Time will tell. I think that above Granite there is a lot of wide open space that should be a great place to go. I'll confirm that in June.

I'm looking forward to your scouting report. I plan to reserve a campsite as soon as you're able to in 2017. We are not fans of big crowds either.

The place I'm thinking of will not need reservations......it's a Forest service fire tower....Not that one would be renting it, I think it's active, but I think it would be a great place to view the eclipse. Pull up Google Earth and find Olive lake......it's west of Granite Oregon. Then just look around to the north west a bit and you might be able to find the tower.

I saw lots o' logs on Google Earth but no water tower. Sounds like a fun trip! We'll be going through Oregon hopefully next month.

I was thinking that it would be pretty cool to have a Ural rally in every state across the path of the eclipse, but that would be a lot to coordinate!

Hat Point 30 miles east of Enterprise Oregon gets my vote. Up at 6900ft and remote.

Looks like me and my extended family will be heading to the John Day area. Not sure which camp site yet.

Except it's outside the area that will have the full eclipse. But a cool destination in its own right.

So I'm looking deeper in the map of totality....it appears Magone lake near Prairie City is right on the centerline.....and it has two group sites that can be reserved a year in advance....a wee bit early now, but come August this year it can be done. The hope is we'll get there first and get a spot. I'd be willing to keep an eye on it and reserve the site as long as we can get enough folks to chime in and vote yes to it. Max number of folks is 75 so there will be lots of room for all.

Keep in mind that the eclipse is on a Monday. We could arrive Thursday the 17th and go on rides to some of these great places on the weekend. Although, the article I referenced in the first post sure makes it sound like if you get there only two days early, you might be fighting the crowds. I would think the farther east the sparser, but more difficult to go back to western Washington afterward. But Mowich knows the back way, which is more fun anyway!

Mowich only mentions Hat Point because he knows it freaks me the heck out. Really great destination, but a trippy ride getting there. Here's a link to a 360 degree view atop the fire lookout on Hat Point:

Then after the "show," we can all hang out or go as we please.

Thanks for all the great ideas. We may want to call Magone Lake ahead of time because others may be also thinking it would be a good spot.

One can only book a year in advance at Magone Lake.....It might work out that you could reserve the spot on the 17th for five days, then securing the spot on the 21st. I'll call them Monday and see if that works. Stay tuned to this channel

Well now....just had a chat with the nice folks at the Prairie City Forest Service. They don't do the reservations at the lake but pointed me in the right direction. It's official, one can't make a reservation this far in advance....one year is the limit. So what we need to do if this is in fact what we are trying to make happen. Everyone who wants to go to Magone Lake (pronounced magoon) needs to start calling this number on or near the 21st of Aug (this year) 1-877-444-6777......maybe someone will get through and be able to make the reservation. In talking with the forest service, it seems there is already lots of interest in the area for the eclipse.....it could be that we will have to settle for dispersed primitive camping on forest service land. Time will tell.

My family saw the TOTALITY on the Big Island of Hawaii in 1997. Get as close to the center of the path as possible. The duration of the occlusion lasts longer, and its all or nothing. Partial is too bright to observe. Absolutely the most amazing thing Ive seen in my life. On a par with flying saucer landings - I expect. I'll be there in 2017.

Fabulous! We're heading to the John Day area next week, so we'll be scouting some areas to camp nearby. Stay tuned!
