Total eclipse of the sun 2017 - Oregon

Postby Cowgirl » Wed Mar 02, 2016 10:21 am

It's not too early to plan ahead for the total eclipse of the sun on August 21, 2017. The eclipse will pass over the US from South Carolina to Oregon. I will be scoping out vantage points in Eastern Oregon where we can camp out nearby. The days are usually clear in August, but it's a better chance that it will be clear in Eastern Oregon than it will be in Western Oregon. If you are in the area of totality, it will look like a 360 degree sunset, so a hilltop or very flat land should give the best views.

And what better way to enjoy the eclipse than with my brother and sister Uralistas? Thoughts?

Top if Steens Mountain would be an ideal vantage point. I've been there in August for the meteor showers and there are campgrounds a couple of miles below the summit. 9'500 elevation and the nearest competing light source is the burg of Burns about 80 miles away.

We've stayed at the bottom of the Steens mountain before. The Alford Desert is a pretty cool place, too. But the mountains are a little too south of the totalization zone. But we could migrate Saturday from Steens to a bit north as Monday appears. 8)

In June of this year I'm going to the Chief Joseph Rally in John Day.....I plan on scouting out a place where one could see the eclipse without a huge crowd around. I'd be willing to bet there will be a lot of folks along the path of it vying for position. Hopefully not too many that far east. Time will tell. I think that above Granite there is a lot of wide open space that should be a great place to go. I'll confirm that in June.

I'm looking forward to your scouting report. I plan to reserve a campsite as soon as you're able to in 2017. We are not fans of big crowds either.

Chuck,
I'm also going to Chief Joseph; you taking the Ural? I haven't decided if I'll take the Ural or the GSA.

The place I'm thinking of will not need reservations......it's a Forest service fire tower....Not that one would be renting it, I think it's active, but I think it would be a great place to view the eclipse. Pull up Google Earth and find Olive lake......it's west of Granite Oregon. Then just look around to the north west a bit and you might be able to find the tower.
