2017 Turkey Leftovers Ride 11/25. Shamong, NJ

Postby ReCycled » Sat Oct 28, 2017 8:42 am

It's that time of year again :boogie:

Where
Wharton State Forest

When
11/25/17

10:00am Ride starts at Atsion Ranger Station, 713-723 U.S. 206, Shamong, NJ 08088
The goal is to get back to the Rangers Station by sundown. We almost always make it, with time to spare.

What
A day ride through Wharton State Park.
Lunch is your turkey leftovers, snacks and drinks you bring with you on the trail.
Also Mighty Joes (see below) has gas and a deli, with good sandwiches, you can grab something there before you meet at the Rangers Station.
Bring food! It can get chilly at times and a good meal will help you stay warm.

Riding
All vehicles must be street legal. If your brother in-law wants to tag along on a dual sport bike that's OK; he cannot bring his quad.
Our main activity is trail riding. This is great Uraling territory, flat and sandy, no rocks and some water crossings.
If you get stuck there will be enough of us around to push/pull you out.
1wd or 2wd will be fine and a willingness to push a stuck bike would be nice.
Knobby or 307 pusher helps, but not required. We've had a Retro with a street tire do the ride before.

A Ural/Dnepr is preferred but we've had two wheelers along before.

This is a great opportunity for newer owners to get their feet wet (pun intended) off-roading. This area is very Ural friendly.
Trails are just wide enough to make it seem adventurous. The sand has just enough slip to make it fun and enough traction to get going (most of the time).
There's nothing too steep or scary off camber. If that sounds boring just pick up the speed a bit or skip the chicken bypasses and try to navigate a deep hole.

This is a rain, snow or shine ride, so dress appropriately.
Wear layers, including a windproof layer.
Nylon windbreakers and jogging pants in your layers will keep you warmer than thicker gear as they stop the wind.
Monkeys should dress for snowmobiling, they are less active than riders and they can get cold in that metal tub.
Warm gloves, wool socks and water proof boots go a long way to keeping riders and monkeys warm.
Spare layers, socks and gloves are a good idea if it is wet/extra cold.

Gas
Gas up before you get to the Ranger Station, we hit the woods at 10am sharp-ish.

Right now I'm off so might join you guys but on 2-wheels. Visiting family could put the kibosh on that... or not.

Very tempting, especially since I missed the Fall JDH.

I will be there.

I can't promise, but the Tgiving rides are generally less challenging and lengthy so if they can take the temps, it's a good ride to introduce a spouse or offspring to off-roading Ural style.

Temps aren't bad, I don't think it's ever been below 40's for a TGiving ride.
Usually gets up around the 50's.
I find it perfect weather for riding, the layers I put on to ward off the morning chill are usually peeled off at the first break.
Later they are put back on as we head back in the afternoon when the sun is behind the trees.

Monkeys are less active and can't move around so generally need to bundle up more.

I unfortunately drew the Friday/Saturday work shift this year for Thanksgiving so I'll be on the job that weekend.

Bump for two week notice :)

There's a breakfast option for early arrivals; 9:00 am at Angie's Country Café (formerly known as Nina's, The Outpost, Fork-n-Spoon)

This is about 1 1/2 miles South of the Ranger's Station on route 206 with plenty of trailer parking in an adjacent lot.

One week to go!
This is always a fun ride.
A little chilly but usually sunny and crisp.

I will be at Angie's by 9am.
Starting with a big breakfast makes the morning riding a little warmer. ;)

Might unload bike at Atsion and ride down if running early.
Loot for white van with Aluma Trailer.

The forecast right now is 55F High and 38F Low so figure that we will start out in 40's and get warmer from there.
Partly cloudy with low chance of rain.

Not bad riding weather all in all.

Wolf, sorry you won't be there.
I would tell you to show up anyway just to check out bikes and bum a ride, but to be honest, given your height and how you fit in the sidecar you'll have a tough time.
Riding monkey with long legs is cramped enough, off-road it is miserable.

We'll look for you at a future ride.
