Anybody else interested in old Suzuki Samurai 4x4s

Here's a place for the group to discuss their other brands of bikes, hobbies, and personal interests not related to Ural & Dnepr Sidecar rigs. But not politics...

I had a Sami once and really miss that little POS. I would LOVE to have another one but they all seem to be rotting or at a ridiculous price. I put lower gearing in the low range in the transfer case and that little thing would go about anywhere. It might not be able to drive over it but it sure could drive around it. Of course I would like to have my 1971 Ford Bronco and my 1978 FJ40 back. :lurker:

old Suzuki Samurai 4x4s

Postby VWNate1 » Fri Jun 02, 2017 11:58 am

That's the sad thing :

These were very popular worldwide *except* U.S.A. then the second series became the darling of the Ghetto for a few years and they sold like hot cakes but soon were just more worthless slightly worn funny looking little vehicles you couldn't give away, all the "serious 4X4'ers" (laughing here) refused to be seen in them so most got abandoned or junked, now they're cult cars and demand far more $ than they're worth .

I also bought a new one in 87'. I was going to buy a new base green one, but at the dealership they had a 'pre-25% import truck tariff'' blue deluxe for the same price, so I bought that one. It was less than $7K if I remember correctly. It was really fun, but as Nate wrote, people laughed and pointed at my little 4x4. Even had a Jeep salesman approach me and tell me that the little 4 banger was not gonna last and that I should buy a Wrangler instead.

My first "new" car was an 87 soft top Samurai. I loved that car.
I delivered pizza in it all through college, and took it places nobody else could (or would) go in the mountains.
I put almost 200,000 miles on it with absolutely no problems (except the cold in the winter).

sean026's steering damper (the best modification ever!)

In 87 I had wife and two small kids and a dog. Love the the Samurais but wifey said too small for family. So bought Izusu trooper. Subsequently traded for 1990 trooper and then again for 96 trooper. Then for chev suburban when three kids and dog needed more space. Now I have 2013 Jeep Wrangler unlimited rubicon. Each vehicle was great in its own right. Sammys r a hobby. Always wanted to work on old cars so when I retired I went sammy crazy. Still have two im finishing up. Puttin them in garage til dec when I get back from the cabin. I'll check my post occasionally

We're supposed to go to Indio, Ca. this Saturday where it'll be 110° F.......

SWMBO is from Oklahoma and apparently doesn't ever feel any heat .

Speaking of Samurais... saw one (shortbox hardtop) in traffic this past Saturday.

It looked awesome with huge mud tires and homemade fender flares.

I was driving so... impossible to take pics. :(

I hadn't seen a rolling one for YEARS around my town... it was like seeing bigfoot !!!

The local ripoff charity car auction place just sold a badly rusty but all original blue one.....

I was shocked at the gaping rust holes in the upper body .
