Need a new starter?

Woe unto you that bought the first model year of a major remake, perhaps this section can help address any 2014 and later model Ural "imperfections". Here's a special section for folks with the latest rigs to discuss 2014 and later model-related topics such fuel injection, 3-wheel disc brakes, hydraulic steering dampers, spin-on oil filters and other anomalies that don't belong on true Russsian motorcycle ;-P We've gone from using big hammers and greasy wrenches to needing computers and Ouija boards in order to fix our rigs.

Please keep this section specific to issues pertaining to 2014 and later models such as fuel injection, sidecar and rear disc brakes and so forth. Ask general or non-2014 and later specific questions in the main Hammerin' & Wrenchin' section.

Yeah can sympathize with that - bit harsh of me there...

Was out today a bit tinkering, dry and sunny but bluddy cold east wind... :(

Have you tried jumping from the battery positive terminal directly to the starter solenoid?

It wasn't clear as to where to jump from.

I got the starter off, had to loosen the air filter box attachments and the breather hose? popped off while I was removing the starter

Mr Wazzock, yep those were the bolts, thanks.

For whoever wondered why this is taking so long, here is a picture of my "garage"

As you can see, depending on the weather is when I can work on it.

When I first saw the picture, I thought it was a Gypsy tent!

Got to clean it up today, haven't put it back together yet. Lots of grime and some rust.

Can I use dielectric grease to prevent further corrosion? Or just leave it dry?

"Inside the starter?" I wouldn't. Suspect it'd travel around and just make it easier for dirt, carbon dust to adhere to. Put it together sparkling clean and dry and just convince yourself when it shows signs of slowing down or acting up it's time again to tear it apart and clean it. Depending on use and riding conditions clean and dry should get you a couple years or so before needed again.
I've never heard of it's use inside. Maybe(?) sparingly on the wire connections, but you do not want dielectric grease on the commutator or armature.

Yea!!!!!
It works!
I can ride again.
It didn't do anything at first,
second try, it went tick, tick and then on the third try, it rolled over and started.
I think the plug to the relay is still a little rusty, but I'm not gonna worry about it for now.
I'm just gonna ride.
