(Pre)historic Uraling

Postby Steve7959 » Wed Jan 27, 2016 12:13 pm

I took the day off work to help my son with something. Unfortunately something came up which meant he had to shy off, so I thought, what shall I do.

......... go Uraling of course.

It's a bit damp and muddy underfoot at the moment, but I'd marked a number of 'green lanes' on the map that I am planning to explore and I thought I'd at least go out and check out access etc ready for when the weather becomes better. Many of the green lanes around my area are close to motor vehicles October to March to stop them getting to cut up in the wet weather.

The first one I came to didn't seem to bad. What the hell...... lets give it a try

Jan 16-01.jpg

About half a mile down the road I came across a field that contained a roman settlement (you can see the 'ral just to the right of the mound)

Jan 16-02.jpg

It was quite extensive and many of the excavations had been left open (Often they fill them back in over the Winter period)

Jan 16-03.jpg

Jan 16-04.jpg

The second lane I came to was of particular interest to me as it crossed the route of the old Wilts and Berks canal. Although abandoned many years ago, there is growing interest to get it restored and re-watered.

Jan 16-05.jpg

I stopped at this point as I was on my own and getting bogged in would have been game over

Jan 16-06.jpg

It wasn't to far to walk and I found the route of the canal

........ I then headed up on to the Lambourne Downs and decided to take a short cut

Jan 16-09.jpg

Shortly after I wished I hadn't :(

Jan 16-11.jpg

After a bit of digging and a few strategically placed logs in the ruts I got myself out.

I then decided to keep off the rough and stay on the tarmac.

Next leg was out to Marlbourough and on toward Avebury.

A brief interlude by Overton Hill and some Prehistoric burial mounds

Jan 16-12.jpg

Past Silbury Hill

Jan 16-13.jpg

Before arriving at Avebury. I like Avebury almost better than Stonehenge. It's more spread out and in my books more impressive purely based on it's overall size.

A cup of tea in the local Café and it was time to head home.

An enjoyable day out :)

Nice trip and nice outfit.
I have a 2002 Dalesman currently being re-furbished.
Did you do the paint job yourself and what other mods have you done to it?

Sorry....

Should have put a couple of links in

Google Avebury stone circle or: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avebury

Silbury Hill: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silbury_Hill

Overton Hill is part of the general area and has many burial mounds (Tumuli) in the area. Most of them have been carbon dated to over 4000 year old

It's pretty much original. The paint job is out of the factory.

I've removed the rear pillion seat and fitted a homemade rack. I've also changed the original Russian seat for a larger leather one with extra springs.

I have got an alternator upgrade on the cards as it's currently got the notorious hand grenade unit fitted.

Beautiful area to explore and the history is bonus for sure. Looks like a great day! Kudos for spending your time and effort exploring your home country. Even though you don't get the "internet" world traveler cool points. Lotsa fun, beautiful, great places to explore in "everyones" backyard regardless of where you live. ENJOY what'cha got! Is all good.

I'm from the land of the uninterrupted forest. It's a trap to see riding country with a view!
