Choices

Postby myklt8 » Wed Mar 09, 2016 10:55 am

After a little life detour kept me from getting my Ural last year, looks like I will be able to grab one this year.
right now I have 2 choices, and it is kind of a heart vs head type pf decision.
they are the same price
the choices are a 2009 Sahara with 18K km on it or a 2013 T with 3K km on it
Going to be on pavement , so the 2WD is not a factor.

Which should be in my stable?

I would go with the newer one. You can look at some of the upgrades between 2009 and 2013 following this link:

Mostly it depends on the former owner and his riding style...
I had to relive last year a 2007 Tourist with only 7500km...
The first name I gave it says it all:
"Banana Coco Split"
The Canadian miner engineer (¿?) wears now 3,5kg Titanium in skull and shoulder.
The banana muffler was swapped to the right side when the new owner had to change the whole clutch and renamed the rig to "El Cuervo / The Craw"
If the owner is like the friendly miner you might invite him for a pint and share a few funny stories, but not the ride.
If the rider is decent and knows what he does, plus is a person who's word is believable, than that is the one to go.

Or in my sister's words:
"Beauty comes from inside!"

8 weeks 12.000km Oregon - Alaska - Oregon, Engine broke free at 21.000km now in CR 37.000km and counting.
With a DIY foam air filter the rig runs well even in tropical rain. The air box looks then like an aquarium. :moto:
Final drives: 1. at 5000km, 2. at 34.000km(+friction plates)

With "both are the same price" I'm assuming it's a decent chunk of change either way. I would ride both and see which one shakes out the best. Lotsa used bikes out there the PO's have totally screwed up by "improving them" from what they see on the internet that seemingly everyone else is doing. Often owners perceived improvement/mods can be sorted out/undone with time and effort. For me when buying used it's not about model year or paint job it's about running condition. Ride them both, then decide.
edit: Just saw your edit with pic. What dealer? Some excellent trusted dealers out there but there are flakes also and all they know about the bike is how much they want for it.

What are the asking prices for each one? I suppose you would need to determine if they are asking "fair prices" as well as whatever year/model it is.

YMMV

$8K give or take for each, the Sahara is at Storm's, they are good guys and know their stuff
from what I could find only 18 Sahara's were imported (maybe as high as 50...I have seen different numbers) so not a lot to compare to as far as what is a fair price.

Just saw this, I ended up snagging that Sahara yesterday.
So hopefully makes the decision easier!

Yes, I shied away from a "Мир" edition because it really is just another Ural with some added bling. About the only Ural I consider special is the Gzhel owned by Tammy in Fort Collins, CO. (of Uniqueridesco.com, shameless plug...) ...not my photo...

YMMV
