What year is my Ural

Postby stack72 » Fri Feb 26, 2016 9:53 pm

Hi all. I would appreciate it if someone could identify my Ural model and engine model also. I bought the bike here in Vietnam. The Vietnam Government disposed of their Police and Military Ural's a while back as "scrap" - and therefore they did not give any papers with thte bikes. There are a few around here - most with sidecars. I am pretty sure my bike was put together with a different year frame and motor etc., - and the carbs have been updated, as has the alternator - which makes identifying exactly what I have even more difficult. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks!

1/ 88655 is stamped on gear box
2/ 212970 (with a smaller 6 stamped in to the 0???) is on top forward left side of block, just behind the breather tube.
3/ The number stamped in cyl head cover is 6201515
4/ On front forks is a stamed number 62 08 155
5/ On back of headlight reflector is a series of numbers ending in 81
6/ On frame is a tag with numbers; 10 536059 445696 and lastly 1989
7/ On frame itself left side near where tube is welded to steering collar 536639

The pictures of the headstock plate with the figure 1989 is a different plate to mine, but has numbers in the same format, and my 1991 bike has 1991 on the plate where yours says 1989.

What shape are the warning lights on the dash? Pre 1998 are round, after that they're square

My '95 and '96 Urals had square dash lights. I know '92 had round ones. Not sure about '93-'94. But the headlight bucket doesn't look stock on this one anyway.

1989 would be completely plausible to me based on the pictures.

If you have the option of choice of year for paperwork, I read that older ones from the 1960's are easier to import to some countries. This could be a consideration IF you wish to title it in the USA. The 650's like yours didn't change much over the years since the 1960's. I think the OHV CJ's look similar, surprised you didn't encounter some of those.
To bad you couldn't buy up a container load of "parts bikes".

Sounds like you're still in Vietnam. Any of the Saigon Sidecar Club still around? If so they could probably help with some info sources.

Vietnam was aligned with the Soviet Union following the Sino-Soviet split. If there are any Changs in Vietnam I suspect they would be a more recent addition.

Answer to the same question on RIMC

"It's a bitza, probably an IMZ-8.103-10. The frame is from 1989. The number stamped on the frame should be 536059 as per the tally plate. The original engine number was 445696 as per the tally plate. The replacement engine is 212970. 3 and 4 are part numbers. If you carefully scrape the paint off the tally plate left of the "10" you should find the exact model number."

Well apart from the M-61 and M62 having plunger frames.
And the M-63 and M-66 having a curved rear section.
The first bike with that type of frame was the M-67 1975/76.
And the reverse gearbox came out with the M-67 and don't worry about the different sidecar chassis.
Not much change since the 1960s :sarcasm:

WOW.
I am shocked and amazed at all the help. THANKS
Some awesome points here that I will research now.
Yes - I am still in Vietnam. No - I won't export to USA. I am Canadian - but don't return much.
The warning lights on dash (?) are round lights in headlight housing.
My bike has a sticker on it from Saigon Sidecar Club. I just sent them a message to see if they are still operating and if anyone there might be able to identify year/model.

Hi all.
I got a reply from the factory that explains it all. I thought some readers may appreciate the data so they can make sense of the various numbers on data plate.
we can suppose that the motorcycle IMZ-8.103-10 with VIN number 536059 had being manufactured in June 22, 1989.
The original engine had being changed to the engine IMZ-8.103 with number 212970, manufactured in May 31, 1993.
The original gearbox had being changed to the gearbox with number 866535, manufactured in May 28, 1993.
Thanks for the support.
Steve
