Ural Mechanic - MA

Postby tank4all » Mon Feb 22, 2016 10:34 am

I'm looking for an Ural mechanic specifically in the south shore of Massachusetts. Does anyone have any recommendations?

My issue is with my bike loosing power once I give it some throttle. I thought it was an ignition coil arcing power but that doesn't seem to be the only cause.

Only dealer in MA is Ural NE but they're up west of Boston I think? This on your 01? If you're sure you have good spark I would suspect bad valve adjustment or fuel starvation. Check your valves then check your ign timing then retune and synch your carbs.

Hi Rivers,

So I took my bike to Ural of NE and they "synched" my carbs and diagnosed the problem (about a $400 bill) for me. I was told that it was a ignition coil problem (type III coil was arcing) and the only solution was to upgrade to a Ducati Ignition coil for an additional $1,200. I've fixed the arcing problem but the engine is still cutting off when I open the throttle. I'm thinking it's a carb problem but I don't know.

edit: I did not go through with the Ducati ignition coil upgrade. Fixed the arcing problem by replacing the ignition coil, spark plug wire, boot and spark plug.

I guess we can assume UNE set the timing correctly if they did an ign swap? Check your valve settings again. I've botched the valve adjust on a twin before. Ran good in the garage but on a road test under load, when opening the throttle the motor would fall flat on it's face. I got complacent and didn't double check the gap after locking the adjuster nuts. It happens.

Sorry, but I didn't end up going through with the ignition upgrade. I was able to somewhat fix the problem with the coil arcing by replacing the ignition coil, spark plug wire, boot and spark plug. I'm starting to think now maybe the carbs are preventing my spark plug from firing when I open the throttle. How do I check my valves? What should I be looking for?

There is a member in Carver that might be able to help you. He is not a professional mechanic but knows quite a bit. I can't remember his name off hand but he posts here a lot. His avatar has a kangaroo on his shoulder. Big into BMW's too. Damn, I know his name but can't think of it now.

If your ignition is the fault another option is Raceways Powerarc ignition for $385.00. I personally have no experience with it but for a 1/3 of the price of a Ducati ignition you might want to look into it.

I looked into the power arc. I'm starting to think my problem might not be the coil.

You probably have a Type III Ural ignition which is normally quite reliable. You can get a whole new one with coil for under $200 from Crawfords.

I do have a type III. I'm starting to think Ural of NE didn't balance my carbs and fuel mixture. I'm not an expert but maybe the carbs are not right and when I open the throttle the mixture is too rich.

Rich condition may be from a weak ignition not able to burn the mixture. The Power Arc fires the plug 3 times per rev ensuring a complete burn or as close as possible. Correctly setup a PA can increase torque by about 10% and improve fuel mileage as much as 20%. The performance boost and better mileage will help pay for the PA in short order. It's one of the best bargins out there for a Ural and the difference can be felt. :)
